5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of brilliant!, 2 Oct 2003
This game is just mindblowing. It's basically about soviet russians invading new york and you are a plumber turned freedom fighter who joins up with more people to fight back and reclaim your freedom.
You start of so that you can only recruit one fighter to fight by your side but as you build up your charisma you can recruit more, twelve in total. You build up your charisma by completing various missions and healing injured people as you go along. You can set different orders to your men such as attack the enemy, defend postion or follow and protect you.As the game goes on it goes from autumn to winter and so on.Also as the seasons change so does the look of your character, his hair gets longer, his clothes get more ripped which in turn gets him to wear more clothes as you will notice. His clothes changing doesn't really make a difference but it's the small things that help round this game off, that make you feel apart of the action. Each misson involves you to really think of how you are going to do things. At the start of every level you emerge from the sewers (where your base is situated) to go about your misson. There are various manholes scatterd throughout the level which you have to open with your wrench (you are a plumber don't forget) which you can quicksave at,just to save you running back to the start of the level to save.Bear in mind that quicksaves don't stay on your memory card once you turn off,so be sure to complete a mission to save your game properly. Each map on which your missons are based consists (roughly) of about three buildings which must be won back from the russians. You cant always complete a mission straight through. You must sometimes do one part on one mission then go back and do something else on another mission. For example on the first map you have a police station and a post office to win back.On the police station level some officers are pinned down by snipers.Next to them is some C4 which you must take then go to the post office level and blow up some fuel reserves which in turn kills the snipers which in turn gives you the ability to complete the police station.
All in all a brilliant game which requires your money and attention.Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good game, 17 Feb 2004
The basis for this game is a slight change in history. The cold war is still raging and Europe is now under the rule of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union invades the United States and chaos ensues.
You play the part of Christopher Stone, a plumber who, along with his brother, got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time when the Soviets invaded. You break out and join an underground resistance movement against the Soviets by freeing the leader of the resistance from the Soviets and therefore become a key figure among the resistance.
This game has excellent graphics and whilst it has a lot of gunplay, also requires you to think. You have to move back and forth between areas to achieve certain objectives to complete other areas, such as destroying a helipad in one area to get past a bridge in another area to stop reinforcements from getting to the helipad, and so forth. It sounds complicated, but once you start playing the game, you soon get the hang of it. The controls are fairly easy to master and the ability to command fellow freedom fighters adds a certain strategy element to the game. The game also has a nice amount of detail, such as the news desk reporting on riots in other cities and giving citizens details about new currency, etc.
However, the game is not without its flaws. Some of the levels are quite difficult, requiring you to play them many times before you work out you're meant to go down a small side alley to avoid the majority of the Soviet army, whilst many are too short. The game overall is too short itself, leaving you wanting more once you've completed it.
Apart from that, the game is most enjoyable and a lot of gamers will find themselves addicted to it. Definitely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom Fighters, 8 Oct 2003
I'm very fussy when it comes to my PS2 games and freedom fighters (FF) is great.

The playability is easy to pick up, with the usual double analogue action on movement and sight. The AI on the FF soldiers is good, they will try to duck and cover when attacking the team and general do have a brain.

Graphic's wise the game holds up, the rain and explosion are realistic as is the RPG which comes striaght at you.

Brain power must be applied in the game in that the different mission are inter-linked, so if you keep dying in one, that probably means that you have to complete another mission before continuing. Realistically, it is excellent in that you can't go off and be "gung-ho" trying to kill all the soldiers, as you will probably be shot to pieces.

The muti-player option adds to the overall game and your pleasure when you destroy one of your mates at it.

Top markers well done.
