Amazon.co.uk Review
Now you can combine a CD-RW and DVD drive for your PC with a player which is just as happy using a TV or hi-fi for output.
Philips JackRabbit portable combo drive runs both as a DVD player and as a CD-RW recordable drive. It can be used with or without a PC to play back audio and video from a variety of media. Although it's not battery-powered, it's easily transportable and can be used as a stand-alone player coupled to a TV.
The unusually styled device, slightly reminiscent of a tank, has two large control buttons at the front, which switch it on and off and flip up its hinged lid. Three LEDs indicate when CD or DVD discs are present and when the drive's running.
Down the left-hand side of the unit is a much wider array of connections than you would normally find on this kind of player. From front to back there are sockets for composite video, S-video, analogue audio, headphones, USB2, digital audio and the drive's power supply.
There's also a battery-operated, infra-red remote control supplied with the JackRabbit, ideal when you're using the device for movie or music playback. It can be used to navigate through on-screen menus, for transport control--play, pause, wind--and to adjust sound volume.
When connected to a PC, which can be done with the supplied USB2 cable, you still need to use the external power supply to run the drive. Other, lower-power devices can draw all they need from the USB2 cable.
The JackRabbit comes with copies of Easy CD Creator Basic, Power DVD, Direct CD and the Blue Button utility. Easy CD Creator provides basic tools to write single or multi-session CD-R disks with the JackRabbit and Power DVD helps you play all kinds of DVD movie content. Direct CD handles CD-RW recordings.
Blue Button is a utility specific to Philips and offers something like a function key directly on the drive. Press the blue button on the right-hand side of the JackRabbit and it launches a PC application, giving quick access to software players and browsers. You can choose the programs you want to use with Blue Button, providing a versatile way of working with the drive.
The JackRabbit is primarily a DVD and CD player, but its file transfer specs are still impressive. The drive is rated at 32x10x40x12, meaning it can play back at up to 4.8 Mbps and write to CD-RW at up to 1.5 Mbps. 12-speed DVD playback and a 2 MB data buffer should ensure you never see jerky movies, either. --Simon Williams
