I first heard this in February 2008 when in La Rochelle area when it was broadcast on the Arte TV channel having returned to my hotel after a long day travelling. The quality of singing is unbelievable and the transcriptions spot on. A major achievement.

Adagietto and Barber's work are what I bought this for and Accentus don't disappoint; what a glorious and heavenly sound!

5.0 out of 5 stars Singing of a high technical and magical quality, 8 Aug 2009
By Mondoro (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Accentus Chamber Choir is an ensemble of over 30 voices based in Paris which has produced some outstanding, highly polished, recordings of mostly unaccompanied choral music. Two of these, the present CD and 'Transcriptions 2' (2006), are transcriptions from instrumental works in which voices capture the detailed texture of the orginal version in a display of sheer technical magic and enchantment that never fails to amaze.

The title piece, Barber's Adagio, was arranged by the composer himself, but the others are transcriptions by others working directly with the choir who must have had its potential in mind when preparing the music for performance. The Mahler Adagietto that follows exploits the stratospheric voice of Solange Anorga, a prominent soloist in both discs, and the sheer depth of alto Helene Moulin's voice, in the earlier part of the Adagietto. The third track, Nystedt's arrangement of a Bach chorale, is probably the most 'advanced' of the 11 tracks on this CD, exploring Bach's chordal structure. The rest of the CD has other treasures, providing new insights into familiar music, translated here by the warmth of the humna voice. And even orchestral songs are given the same treatment, with the soloist's line gvien to the choir which also provides a supporting cushion of sound.

A truly magical album. Had I six stars it would get the lot.
