5.0 out of 5 stars The definative snooker game, result!, 1 Oct 2003
Being a keen snooker fan myself I was excited to see this game was being released. I had played the previous titles and enjoyed them a lot, and this promised to be an improvement. I was not let down. I wont go on too much about the mini-games as I never play them, but the 8-ball and 9-ball pool options are welcome additions. The career mode is where it's at though, play through season after season, in a number of various tournaments including the Embassy World Championship, trying to get to that elusive number one ranking in the world.

The look and feel of the game is good, get too engrossed and you may actually think you're really playing the deciding frame in the crucible for the World Championship! On the downside though, the player animations could do with some improvement and the some of the camera angles are questionable as I often find I need to go into 'birds eye view' to see how my shot does. These are minor hiccups though, nothing to whinge about too much.

The players are there, though there is a lack of some of the real top 16, the O'Sullivan's, Doherty's, Ebdon's, Williams', Higgins', Hendry's and co are there. The create-a-player mode is good and another useful addition in this game is the opportunity to buy new clothes, cues, tables and unlock new venues with your prize money.

In conclusion, if you're a die-hard snooker fan, or even if you just have a passing interest in the game, I would recommend this game to you. It is not the 'perfect' snooker game yet, but playing this you get the feeling that it's not too far off. Roll on WCS2004!!

4.0 out of 5 stars How much better is this than the 2002 version??, 4 Jul 2003
I was very excited when they finally released this game as I have been waiting for it for months. I was well into the 2002 version and after hearing reviews from different web sites I was anxious to play Championship Snooker 2003. I am very pleased that they have decided to include Pool in this version as it makes a pleasant change from constant snooker. Unfortunately you can't play Pool in Tournament or Career mode, which is a bit of a let down although I know the game is primerily Snooker. The characters are a vast improvement from 2002 and almost look like the players they portray. The table graphics are similar to 2002 and don't look much more impressive, but this is made up for by the character and surround graphics. There are more things to do in this game. You can buy various items including new clothing and cues. The camera angles are very different in the new game, giving more angles to view the balls as the speed towards the pockets. Most of the time this is impressive and the close up pocket view is good when the pot goes in. The only thing I found was (especially on the 8 Ball Pool table) that the angles can change too quickly leaving you dizzy and feeling slightly nauseous, but don't let that put you off. This game is a good improvement from 2002 and anyone who liked the old version will most definately be satisfied with the new one. And, offcourse, anyone buying this game that hasn't got 2002 and likes snooker sims, will be pleased with the superb game play and the months and months of enjoyment from playing Championship Snooker 2003.

4.0 out of 5 stars Champion, 7 Jul 2003
By ken (england) - See all my reviews
I recently bought WCS2003 and was pleasantly surprised by the Codemasters team! The presentation of the game is striking, the players are well animated and quite lifelike,a bit slow but you can speed up the game whilst the opposition is at the table. Now you may be thinking "Snooker on PS2,How boring!"but i can tell you this game certainly is not boring! The beginners aiming aid is a blessing for all of you beginners to knock in breaks of 100
+ in no time at all, whilst getting to know the controls and spin and then moving up a level is where the challenge begins.
There are various different game modes like Career mode,Trick Shot mode and exhibition mode, and if you havn't got time for a Frame of snooker then you might decide to have a quick game of Pool or 9 Ball.Career mode is the one tho,as you choose which tournaments you compete in and work your way up the rankings until you are competing in the World Championships for the coveted title of "World Champion!"Even the commentary of John Virgo and Dennis Taylor is ok,you may decide to turn it off after a while, but i find it creates the right atmosphere. All in all after a few late nights and matchsticks propping up the eyelids you will be well satisfied if you are a avid snooker fan,and it will still bring enjoyment to those of you who aren't so sure.Good presentation, easy to use control method, not to annoying commentary and different gameplay modes make this game well worth my hard earned cash.CHAMPION
