Amazon.co.uk Review

The hype is strong for Ego War. Trumpeted by the dance-music press as one of 2003's "next big things", London's Audio Bullys have been causing something of a stir with their fuzzy soundsystem beats, loud basslines and shouty cockney vocals. Debut single "We Don't Care" was a menacing musical manifesto; a loud, laddish, bass-heavy mash-up of house, dub, hip-hop and bassline garage that seemed to stick two-fingers up at perceived musical boundaries. Clearly, these guys mean business. The duo's much-heralded debut long player expands this manifesto further, taking in elements of ska, punk and electro. It's pretty good, too, mixing genuinely abrasive floor-fillers--"Real Life", "The Snow" (a disco-punk-house mash-up of epic proportions)--with more contemplative numbers (such as the wistful "Veteran" or "100 Million"). Sometimes they come on like the Specials jamming with Basement Jaxx with The Streets' Mike Skinner on vocals, at other times like Magnificent Seven-era Clash with Rob "Stereo MC's" Birch on vocals; only dirtier.

It's not a complete triumph--occasionally Franks' vocals can grate, and there's a certain "sameyness" towards the end--but it's certainly one of the most entertaining dance albums of 2003 so far. Here's hoping we hear more soon from these new heroes of "up-yours house". --Matt Anniss

CD Description

'Ego War' is the debut album from West Londoner's Tom Dinsdale and Simon Franks AKA the Audio Bullys. Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Specials and Ian Dury through to garage pioneers Grant Nelson and Todd Edwards, 'Ego War' is a tough mix of ska, 2-step, hip hop and electro. The raucous debut single 'We Don't Care' is also included.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not The Streets but We Don't Care, 4 Jun 2003
By A Customer
I bought Ego War purely on the strength of the single We Don't Care which I thought was one of the best dance singles to come out in years. It seemed to be so in your face. The album is not as full on as the single. In fact it's quite gentle (and not that great) in places like the very syrupy garage of Turned Away which sounds a bit like Romeo in places - not good. However there are some very good songs on it. Real Life has a very heavy elctro feel, with treated vocals and synths and snippets of overheard conversations. We Don't Care is incredible a perfect slab of fat thug house with equally thuggish vocal lines.

There are a few surprises as well such as Face In A Cloud which samples Joe Cocker and keeps threatening to turn into Red Alert by Bassment Jaxx but the strangely dramatic scratcy sample in the middle breaks it up.

The Things sounds very much like The Specials and I can see where the comparisons come from, with it's samples of cop show themes and fairground organs.

The biggest let down on the album is the vocals. Sometimes he comes across like Terry Hall with a bad hangover, but othertimes he just sounds like a tuneless lout and it does grate. Saying that though it is as immediate as the Streets debut though nowhere near as inspired. It still gets 4 stars though as even though they are covering a lot of ground done by a lot of other bands there are still enough surprises and string hooks to get you up and dancing.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE album of the summer, 16 April 2003
With the recent emergence of Mike Skinner's The Streets and now the Audio Bullys it seems that the UK has invented yet another dance sub-culture. Yob House? Oi House? Geeza House? Who knows...

What you can say for sure though is that it is most decidedly British. Simon Franks accent is unmistakably London and lyrically influenced by everyone from The Specials and The Jam through to the Stereo MCs and the Happy Mondays.
The accompanying beats and bass lines are a who's who of recent developments in UK dance music. Imagine that Massive Attack, the boys from Skint/Ninja Tune/Mo Wax, So Solid Crew and Liam from the Prodigy got into a fight in a studio....anyway you get the idea.

The first single, We Don't Care, had attitude. The sort of attitude that suggests you may have just spilled it's pint, looked at it's bird or you've just walked into a City pub wearing a United strip.

The new single, The Things, is a different ball game altogether. A dub laden lament about the need to change lifestyles and sort yourself out that sounds oh so familiar.

If you liked The Streets, the Stereo MCs, The Specials, Basement Jaxx, The Jam...in fact pretty much any music to have come out of this country in the last 30 years or so then you should check out Ego War.

As I've been telling mates on an annoyingly regular basis "It's gonna be THE album of the summer"

By Marc Bean (glasgow) - See all my reviews
I already had this album for ages but i finally saw Audio Bullys live on Friday night supporting Basement Jaxx in Glasgow and they were even better than on CD,alot more dancier live to be honest but the more i listen to the album the more i love it.
yeah they will get compared to the Streets but im not really the biggest fan of The Streets though to be fair Mike Skinner is very talented and a great ryhmer this is more for me.
Standout tracks for me are 'Real Life', 'The Things' and 'Ego War'.
