Oleg Marshev is not so widely known as other Russian pianists like Volodos and Pletnev, but he is in the same class both technically and artistically, as his superlative recordings of Prokofiev's complete solo piano works shows.

These performances of Shostakovich's piano concertos are incredibly exciting and vivid. Second movement of the 2nd concerto is very slowly played (7:46) and one of the most deeply felt performances on record. Technically on a par with Hamelin, but Marshev's playing has more feeling and abandon, and orchestra playing is also breath taking. Coupled with equally brilliant account of 24 Preludes.
