Of the many possible introductions to legendary 1970s reggae imprint Trojan Records, this collection by influential West End DJ Don Letts--famous for introducing London's punks toJamaican music--is one of the best, distilling the label's massive collection of seminal recordings to two flawless platters. Disc One covers vocal-roots material and Disc Two, presumably for later-in-the-evening spins, tackles dub; there isn't a dud track in the lot, and the best songs here, including the Maytals' classic "54 64 Was My Number" and Lee "Scratch" Perry & the Upsetters' "Return of Django", arguably represent the apex of Jamaican reggae.

The problems i had in deliberating over whether to part my hard earned cash were 2 fold. a) this is a trojan compilation which means (for the most part) too little wheat and too much chaff. b)the last don letts comp on heavenly jukebox had some classics (most of which i had) but the supporting cast were somewhat turgid.

The quality of this album came as a big surprise for amongst the reggae staples: 'wear you to the ball','54/46', 'man next door'etc... were some stone cold classics from the rocker's era, that i was amazed had never been plundered by the legions of reggae compilers before: 'mistry babylon', 'burn babylon', 'rockers no crackers' are in my opinion some of the best reggae ever committed to wax - totally sublime and backed by quality rhythms.

The remainder of disc one was of similar quality and benefits from departing from the trojan format of concentrating on one idea or gimmick. Thus you have rocksteady and soul rubbing shoulders with deejay tracks and ska.

The overall impression of disc one is that mr.letts has dug deep in his crates and presented a well crafted reggae set that showcases all the diversity and quality of jamaican music.

Disc 2 (the instrumental disc) doesn't work quite as well on a continuous listen but again amongst the more obvious tracks (and there quite a few especially if you are a ska or dub enthusiast) there are some obscure gems to be scooped up.
