A witty, human, sensuous and sunny film that lifts you out of the doldrums wherever you are. More French in feel than Spanish, the setting could just as easily be the South of France or a Tuscan farmhouse. The father is magnificent. The photography is alive with the sensations of Summer and despite numerous cliches (the weathered old philosopher as artist as lover as pater familias and Penelope Cruz as a sultry scheming Lolita who eventually wins out over her sisters)...this film is a masterpiece that will make you smile, even on a miserable, sleet-ridden day in London. Thats how it was, when I entered the Piccadilly arthouse cinema and saw 'Belle Epoque' with a girlfriend. We both emerged and booked tickets to Deya.

A marvellous romantic comedy, 'oozing ... sex appeal' (Tatler), and 'a masterpiece' (Independent). Set in 1930s Spain, 'Belle Epoque' is a love story full of delight and charm, in which a handsome young army deserter spends a summer in the country house of an artist and his four daughters, holidaying from Madrid, the youngest of whom is the outstanding Penelope Cruz (recently starred as Pelagia in 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' with Nicholas Cage and now filming 'Vanilla Sky' with Tom Cruise). Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film 1994.
