Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
Wireless-G is the upcoming 54Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times as fast as the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country but since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, files, and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions using 128-bit WEP encryption, and also supports industrial-strength Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) wireless security. The Router protects your PC from most known Internet attacks with a powerful Stateful Packet Inspection firewall. It can also serve as a DHCP Server, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. And even with all this power, set up is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Verified Linksys products have been tested with Intel Centrino" Mobile Technology for compatibility and interoperability, further enhancing your wireless experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy peasy!, 24 Mar 2003
I had a 1mbps BlueYonder broadband connection, connected via USB rather than an NIC. What I wanted to do was provide broadband access for other computers in the house, without the hassle of wiring, and swap the main PC from USB to NIC connection to setup a home network.

Not knowing very much about networking at all, after a bit of investigation, I purchased the LinkSys Wireless 'G' broadband router, a LinkSys NIC card, and a LinkSys Wireless 'G' laptop adapter.

I began by installing the NIC card in the main desktop PC. Simplicity in itself. The instructions are very clear and more to the point, up to date. I'm running Windows XP and there are clear instructions even for this very latest operating system. There are also separate instructions for Windows 98, ME & 2000 users.

Then came the router itself. Connect up the power supply, the network cable from the cable modem, then another network cable from the router into the NIC card of the PC. The router has a setup page that you access through Internet Explorer, but in fact, the default settings work fine. From the setup page I could find out the MAC address of the router to register with BlueYonder. Did that and it all started working immediately. I was stunned!

Final job was to insert the network adapter into the laptop PC. That was the hardest part - getting the card into the slot. It's a very tight squeeze. That done, ran the setup utility and the card auto-detects the network. And that was that - the laptop also had broadband access from anywhere in the house.

Performance is excellent. When the laptop is close to the router, the signal strength is excellent at 54mbps. At the furthest point away, it drops to 18mbps but considering the broadband connection is only 1mbps, this hardly matters.

The LinkSys products are absolutely superb. It couldn't have been simpler. I was worried that the instructions would be full of jargon that I wouldn't understand but that wasn't the case. So if you're a network dummy like me, and would like to provide shared broadband access to other computers, I'd recommend the LinkSys gear without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOW EASY CAN IT GET?, 11 Sep 2004
I bought this piece of kit to use with NTL Broadband through a set top box, linked to my pc through an ethernet cable - if you are connected by USB you'll need to change; the NTL website tells you how and its a better connection anyway. To set up the router I followed the simple instructions in the leaflet that comes in the box. NTL recognised the router as a new connection and after asking for my NTL user name and password allowed me to register the router. I used the default settings and was up and running straight away.

I have my main pc linked by ethernet cable and my son's laptop and my pocket pc by wireless. The range is excellent. The router is in an upstairs bedroom at the front of the house and we have wireless connection throughout the building and right the way down the garden, to about 35 meters distance.

By going into the settings menu via the web page you can restrict wireless access to specific machines recognised by MAC number (the instructions tell you how to find them). There is also a host of other settings that the more techie minded can play with - but if you just want the vanilla service, stick with the default settings; they work!

I can't praise this piece of kit highly enough. I've noticed no drop in speed on my main pc and the router can be used without it being switched on.

You want a mixed wired and wireless LAN - buy this kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars It just works, 6 Oct 2005
After lots of messing about trying to find out what was required and looking at different ways to set up a wireless network I was advised to visit the Linksys website. They have a little video which guides you through wireless networks, what they are, how they work, what kit you might require etc.
After watching this everything seemed simple! I bought the wireless router and, while reading through the setup sheet, plugged it into my NTL broadband modem and configured it. Easy.
How both my desktop and laptop can use the internet and exchange files.
