5.0 out of 5 stars Dualit in Heaven, 27 May 2003
By Alistair (Cardiff) - See all my reviews
This stylish machine is excellent value for money and produces wonderful creamy espresso coffee. It takes 1.5 litres of water which is great for parties and the two spouts make bulk coffee brewing less of a hassle. When turned on it heats up incredibly fast and is ready to work almost staight away. The steam wand is fantastic and can create thick hot foamed milk. As a former starbucks employee, I can't fault this machine. (it can be a little noisy, but that is part of the fresh coffee experience, and it never fails to impress!)

In short this beats hands down any of its rivals in terms of design, quality of build and value. I have tried many many machines like this and if you want excellent coffee at home without spending over budget, this is the one.

2.0 out of 5 stars New Element Needed!, 21 Jun 2003
The Dualit is a great machine when it's working, but my 2-year old machine has been sent back to Dualit for a new element and filter holder, at a cost of £40. It took them three weeks to tell me this, and I have no idea when I will get the machine back. A friend of min, in Budapest, has had his machine less than 2 years, and the element has gone in his machine. He has decided to scrap it and get a Gaggio in its place. Are Dualit aware that their elements seem to have a lifespan of only 18 to 24 months? As a Dualit fan, with a toaster and coffee grinder to match my 889, I am very diasppointed that this machine has let me down, especially since I have cherished it since new.
Buy it, but beware of possible expensive repairs in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dualit is impressive, 13 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Recommended by Which? this makes lovely coffee. It's compact so it can stay out on the worktop. The switches are badly designed and not intuitive to use. That's a minor point though.
However after 14 months a switch didn't click properly and the brew head let water/steam through when not in use. You could still use the machine though.
However the best bit was that Dualit service department was superb!! They gave lots of help over the phone and phoned back when they said they would. When I told them the valve wasn't closing off they sent me out a replacement machine immediately with no questions asked.
