Back in 1995 when Goldeneye was released, the updating of Bond into the modern era of film worked resoundedly. This was the best Bond film in ages, with the best actor since Connery, and used excellent set pieces and special effects. Shame the same can't be said of the music.

Trying to update the soundtrack to a modern sound failed miserably. It's a weird mix of drums and some kind of techno beat. In the movie, the music really takes backseat to the action, and seems to blend in perfectly, but listening to it on it's own is a jarring sensation.

There are clicks and whirrs, beats and thumps all seemingly arranged in a haphazard formation. It's hard to listen to as it doesn't really have any resemblence to a tune.

And while the majority of the album is like that, there are a few brilliant songs. Tina Turner's excellent Goldeneye theme tune is one of the best ever, and the Goldeneye overture track (which is played during the pre-credit opening scene in the movie) is a masterpiece - the only time in this album that there is a listenable tune.

The love song take a more traditional role in film music, with actual instruments instead of digital computers composing. When you first hear it, it is like a breath of fresh air for your ears, as they experience a different sound. And yes, it's quite good, but when you hear it for the hundredth time, it starts to get a little wearisome.

It's a shame that such a good film gets saddled with such a poor soundtrack. But it may be worth getting just for the few decent tracks, especially since this album is hard to find, and virtually impossible to download off the internet.
