5.0 out of 5 stars One of Barry's Best for Bond, 8 Jun 2004
By Craig Thornton (Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
With his scores for the early Bond films, John Barry developed the quintessential action/spy movie music that has never been beaten. 1967's 'You Only Live Twice' is the middle of Barry's three finest scores for the Bond series (inbetween 'Thunderball' and 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', all of them coming in a period in Barry's career when he could do no wrong regardless of which genre of film he tried his hand at), and it is certainly the most lush. The track 'Mountains and Sunsets' which is an instrumental version of the main title song is one of the most beautiful themes written for any movie, and the song itself is one of the best of the Bond series thanks to its thought-provoking lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Not only this, but both the action and suspense cues within the score are fantastic as well; the simplicity of his themes allows Barry to play around with them, ensuring that things never become repetative yet still achieve a cohesive whole.

Due to the time constraints of LP's, only 40 minutes or so of the score has been available up until now. However with this re-issue, part of a re-realease of all of the Bond scores, we get a very large amount of the rest of Barry's score, which may not present anything amazingly new but does provide more of this great music. Added to this is the fact that the entire score has been digitally remastered, the benefit of which can really be felt when listening to it the first time after coming from the original CD release: the sound is so good that for a moment you are not sure if its the same soundtrack or not. This would be reason enough alone to buy this CD but with all of this extra material and it all coming in a smart package, this score is a must for any soundtrack fan's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bond Soundtrack!, 23 Aug 2007
By Mr. B. Charles "jimmycb" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews

This is one of my favourite Bond soundtracks beginning with one of the classic opening title themes, performed by Nancy Sinatra.

John Barry's score mixes a blend of classical and oriental musical instruments as a perfect accompaniment to the Japanese landscapes and locations in the film.

This soundtrack is perfect for unwinding after a busy day. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting Bond score, 13 Sep 2009
By B. Mccann "Barry McCann" (Balckpool, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ian Fleming had taken the title for this Bond adventure from a Japanese poem and with the film's "mysterious East" setting, Barry wanted the theme to avoid the camp excesses of the previous two movies and produce something more atmospheric. With Leslie Bricusse's darker than usual lyrics - as much about loss as making "one dream come true" - the song turned out the most hauntingly evocative to ever grace the series. Nancy Sinatra, Frankie's daughter, was flown over from the USA to complement the piece with her vocals. She was initially nervous of working with an orchestra and advised Barry to get Shirley Bassey back. To calm her nerves, he simply recorded her vocals in a separate studio and the two matched up beautifully.

The main score remained in tone with the theme, thanks to Barry combining his signature brass and strings with traditional Japanese rhythms and instrumentation. The result is 007's most classical sounding score (particularly the bitter sweet "Death of Aki" - guaranteed not to leave a dry eye). Consequently, it remains the most highly regarded score among aficionados, including the present composer, David Arnold. Buy this and be seduced.
