It isn't John Woo, but it's still a great action thriller. Not massive on the stunts until the end and boy, it's worth waiting for. The beauty of Chow yun Fat is that he does all of his own stunts (watch out for the: doing a somersault, catching two guns in each hand, and shooting a bad guy before he hits the floor). The acting is admitedly camp, but it's all part of the charm of Hong Kong cinema. If you like this film, check out, in my opinion, the two must have Hong Kong films: The Killer and Hard Boiled. Chow yun fat and John Woo the two greats of Hong Kong Cinema.

I've seen a lot of Chow Yun Fat films and this is still one of his funniest. Not as outrageous as later Wong Jing films but Chow gives a suitably endearing performance as the God of Gamblers accompanied by a particularly funny Andy Lau. And that Dragon; what a bodyguard.
The only let down is the clumsy subtitles but that's a minor gripe because this is a fun film, highly recommended.
Oh and it wouldn't be a Chow Yun Fat film without a shoot out or two would it...and that darn tune seems to follow him wherever he goes.

The legendary God of Gamblers (Yun-Fat Chow) loses his memory because of a petty revenge action by the small-time gambler, Knife (or Dagger as he is referred to in the sequel). Several severe blows to the head leave the god with the intellectual capacities of a 6 year old. Knife and his partners in crime decides that it is their responsibility to take care of the man that is unknown to them, as it was their prank, that cost him his memory. Besides they soon discover that the childish stranger has uncanny abilities, when it comes to gambling.
Yun-Fat Chow unfolds his talent as the suave, charming and humorous Ko Chun, God of Gamblers. But perhaps his talent is even further revealed by his portrayal of a 6 year old. Beside the both funny and thrilling scenes of gambling, I think the scene of Yun-fat Chow crouched like an insecure and lonely child in the street waiting for his friend Knife, to pick him up, will stay with me for a while.

Nothing about the movie itself! It is a funny comedy with some really great shootouts (5 stars). But the quality of the used master and its transfer on tape are really bad! The middle of the film with all those cracks, dirt and scratches on the print is nearly unwatchable (0 stars)! Couldn't Made In Honkong have that mess cleaned up?
