CRIME STORY is one of my favourite Jackie Chan films. It's hard to say that it features some of the best action scenes from his career as each film is a delight in its own right (except for ISLAND OF FIRE - avoid like the plague! even Jackie himself hates it!), but it is a grippig film from start to finish.
Anyone who has been introduced to Jackie Chan through the likes of RUSH HOUR, SHANGHAI NOON or AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS will be postively/negatively (choose as suits your tastes) surpirsed by the lack of any humour in the film. Unlike his famous POLICE STORY movies, where the violence is offset by humourous slapstick moments, CRIME STORY presents itself as a hard-hitting crime thriller in the traditions of such films as HEAT & INFERNAL AFFAIRS, and for me this is very refreshing as I like my serious thrillers as much as I like my comedies (probably more so, in fact!)
CRIME STORY sees Jackie Chan playing a policeman who's duty it is to protect a businessman who thinks there are people out to kidnap him.
Of course, there are, and he does, in spectacular fashion, and it is Jackie's job to track him down.
Spectacular fight sequences ground in reality and a gripping storyline make this a must-see movie for any Jackier Chan fan!

The film's plot, apparantly based on a true story, is fairly predictable and could very easily have come from Hollywood. There is no mystery for the audience and it is left for JC to uncover the deeds of his partner. This lack of mystery for the audience doesn't matter. The film is enjoyable to watch and keeps you engaged as JC starts to piece the jigsaw together to save the hostage. No outright comedic gags but a couple of chuckles. I will not give away too much of the films plot and action but make a couple of points.

What to me looked like a potential love interest for Jackie's character never develops which is welcome as the film doesn't need unwarranted distractions which so often spoil otherwise well scripted films.

For those wanting to see JC's acrobatic style of fighting you might be slighlty dissappointed. It isn't until near the end of the film that any substantial fighting action takes place. For those wanting to see JC's or general martial arts I recommend his earlier films ( Drunken Master etc ).

In this film it feels like JC wants to take a break from his less serious films and put together a performance which people can see a different side to his acting.

As a JC fan I find myself giving an overall rating of 4 to reflect the overall quality of the film ( although perhaps the rating is 3.8 rounded up ). For people who have not see a JC film you have to ask why you want to watch one of his films, you will either be pleasantly suprised or dissappointed. Try some of his earlier films as well as the widely known such as Rush Hour.

Crime Story tends to be overshadowed by the Police Story films, but it's a very different animal: while it may share a few familiar faces, it's a straight-up thriller without the need for much comic relief and with a strong dramatic turn from Jackie Chan. Focussing on a kidnapping carried out by corrupt cops who figure they can keep the investigation off track, it's not short on action, but like the similarly comparatively lesser know Thunderbolt this time the violence is played rather more for real - when the punches land, they hurt. It's a shame Chan never followed it up with more dramatic roles, but it certainly stands up as one of his most memorable pictures.

Hong Kong Legends' UK DVD boast a typically good transfer (with original Cantonese or dubbed English language options, though the film unfortunately has a new main title card) and respectable extras package - audio commentary by Bey Logan, interviews with Bruce Law and Teddy Chen and original theatrical trailer - though Dragon Dynasty's US NTSC DVD boasts a better selection of extras, including director commentary and deleted scenes.

I have watched a lot of Chan's movies, and while this change of pace to serious drama is by no means his worst, it's not one of his best either.
I think the problem is that when Chan directs himself, he gives himself ample oppurtunities to show off his comic talent, which is a huge part of his on-screen appeal. However, in this serious drama involving more guns than Kung Fu, and no comedy whatsoever, the director doesn't allow Chan so much as a smile, meaning that the viewer misses out on a large chunk of Chan's considerable charm and talent - which is a pity.
This is not a terrible movie, but it ain't great either, and it certainly isn't a good vehicle for the rubber faced Chan.

crime story for me is jackie chans best film ever.its just awesome.the story/acting/stunts are just out of this world.this could of easily have been included in jackies police story series but wasnt mainly because this was originally lined up for jet li who pulled out during production and director kirk wong ask jackie if he could take on the role.thank god he did this was tailor made for jackie who again suffered a few injuries while doing his own stunts.based on true events the story is powerfull from start to finish.the film itself features some breathtaking stunt work by jackie and not forgetting a great performance from kent cheng as detective hong.ok it maybe not as fast paced as his other films but in terms of acting this brings jackie best ever performance.a must see for all chan fans and people who like hard hitting thrillers
