Not just "any old iron"!!!, 9 Jun 2003
By A Customer
The Philips GC4018 Azur steam iron is, in my opinion, not just "any old iron"! Firstly, in part lilac colour, it looks quite trendy (some may say a bit feminine?) - anyway it's probably as trendy as steam irons go! It glides beautifully, in fact I'd forgotten what a joy a gliding iron can be... as my previous iron had decided to stick to everything. The iron has the usual range of temperature ranges (from silk though to linen) and a temperature pilot light which you're supposed to wait to go out before beginning ironing -which I usually do unless I'm in a rush! The results so far have been very satisfactory for all temperature settings. There's a useful steam boost and a separate shot of steam - but this can mean for any serious pile of ironing you'll need to refill the water tank more than once. Getting water in and out of the water tank is easy for those of us with dextrous hands but could be tricky for anyone with arthritic hands. A really good feature is the "drip stop" which stops water leaking or dripping out if the iron is at too low a temperature setting. This avoids those unpleasant marks other irons may make which annoyingly can mean the garment then having to be re-washed. Another excellent feature, especially for anyone like me living in a hard water area, is the "calc-clean". This is recommended to be used every couple of weeks and removes scale and impurities. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to do and so far seems to be working well - in fact I wish my kettle had this feature as it's always furred up! We all can, and do, drop our irons (my last one cracked and hence I needed a new one). Well, according to the manufacturer, the Philips 4000 series has "tested best" in overall drop tests by no less than six European consumer magazines! Wow bet you're really impressed now! In conclusion, if you're looking for a trendy steam iron at a mid-range price that gets great results, this could well be the one for you!
