2.0 out of 5 stars Selective documentary on 20th century pianists, 10 Feb 2004
By A Customer
On the surface, this DVD release of a 1989 Peter Rosen/Philips Classics production looks like a mouth-watering selection of film clips. Notwithstanding the variable quality of film, there is much for the collector of such memorabilia: Hofmann playing Rachmaninov, Horowitz making a meal of Scriabin, Myra Hess in Beethoven, a Hollywood-style look at Brailowsky, glittering Bach from Glenn Gould, and much else, all combining to remind us what pianism and pianists were like before our time. What makes this DVD into a documentary, and what ruins it totally, is the dreadful, exaggerated and inaccurate commentary (languidly delivered by David Dubal)which not only links the whole thing together, but which - in common with such productions - actually interrupts what little film there is as a voice over. Anyone who purchased the similarly awful "Sergei Rachmaninoff Memories" (NVC Arts UK VHS 3984-25386-3) will know exactly what I mean. In the case of the Great Pianists release, no commentary and twice as much film would have been a welcome blessing. In the case of the NVC Arts production, a combination of Pletnev's Paganini Variations and Igoshina's solo piano items were all this release ever needed, whereas it has been totally ruined by a mysterious form of verbal flatulence which - an affliction of both these releases - sets out to 'sell' the music to the viewer/listener. It is to be hoped that there is a great deal more archive footage for collectors to anticipate, but let us also hope it comes without one single spoken word.
