4.0 out of 5 stars Only Two Hands?, 1 Sep 2007
By J. Mackle (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When you watch this disc, you see the performance of an artist at the height of his powers and at one with the music he is playing. With supreme technique and exquisite feeling, Brendel will hold you entranced from beginning to end and inspire you with the thought that, perhaps even you could play like he does, if only you practised enough. (How good do you have to be to play a Beethoven sonata with your eyes closed?) Only four stars because, of all the sonatas that he could have played, he chose the Hammerklavier, which, while a work of indisputable genius and one requiring great understanding and interpretative powers, does not do a lot for me, I must admit.
