5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, 30 Aug 2007
By Rossa Crowe (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Most people will buy this DVD for Rostropovich's performance. I bought this mainly for Galina Vishnevskaya's performance of Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death.
Rostropovich is fantastic and I am a huge fan of Shostakovich so this was also very interesting to me. However DVDs of instrumental music do not really excite me. Sometimes we look more at the players than listen to the music. However the performance is outstanding and obviously cello players will be delighted to see this great cellist in action.
I have not watched the Prokofiev all the way through - I did not find the music interesting.
Watching vocal music is important - the expressions and facial features of the singers add to the performances greatly. I am a huge fan of Galina Vishnevskaya - she is a legendary singer, probably my favourite. She has an achingly beautiful and expressive voice, gutsy when needed and she is an amazing actress. She was responsible for reving these songs in the Soviet Union in the late 50s. This song-cycle is extraordinary and should be much better known. Her performance is breathtaking. It is one of the greatest performances I have seen. Her characterisation is unbelievable and to see it performed visually brings it to life. She recorded the work for Melodiya in the early 1960s with Rostropovich on the piano - I think I prefer this version however form 1970. She is simply on fire and it is a real privilege to see such a performance. More please from Galina Vishnevskaya - there is so little of her performances available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good DVD.Fantastic Bonus, 17 Feb 2008
Rostropovich playing the First Cello Concerto by Shostakovich is fantastic. I think ridiculous finding this "old" because it is black and white ....the horn solos played by Barry Tuckwell are very special. The conductor is very good too .The Prokofiev is very good too. But the Bonus. Ah, it is ridiculous calling this as a "Bonus". The bonus is more important than the other pieces. Rostropovich plays very well the piano part and Galina Vishnevskaya gives here the most impressive version of this fantastic Song Cycle by Mussorgsky that I ever heard. The couple understood every note, every word. I listened three time the first time I saw. It's a class of musicality und comprehension of a Lieder .
