Amazon.co.uk Review
Don Quichotte, composed by Ludwig Minkus for the Bolshoi in 1869, was relatively unknown in the West until Nureyev's new choreography--which naturally gave him centre stage as Basile--was introduced at the Vienna State Opera in 1966. A later production in 1981 forms the basis for this 2002 success by the Paris Opera.

Don Quichotte is in some ways a misnomer for the ballet. Rather than being the dominant character, here the beloved hero of Cervantes' original novel and tilter at windmills is a catalyst for the troublesome events which beset the love story of Basile and Kitri. The dream in which the knight encounters the queen of the dryads becomes a glittering fault in the narrative. But there is no doubting the fluid delights of the pas de deux between Basile (Manual Legris) and Kitri (the enchanting Aurélie Dupont), always literally several steps ahead of their would-be romance spoilers, which rather overshadow the pathos of Jean-Marie Didière's Quichotte. Nureyev's triumph, though, remains the teeming ensemble dances that reaffirm the close marriage between Minkus's score and the unfolding drama, here immeasurably enhanced by Alexandre Beliaev's Goya-esque designs. Ermanno Florio's musical direction keeps the pace light and busy.

On the DVD: Don Quichotte is presented in 16:9 video aspect ratio with a choice of stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS (by far the best) soundtracks: the quality is all you'd expect of a standard modern television broadcast, although the subtleties of the theatrical lighting don't always shine through. Extras are limited to previews of other TDK releases. --Piers Ford

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime dancing: sublime choreography., 18 Jan 2004
By Tony Heyes (Greater Manchester UK) - See all my reviews

Nureyev's "Don Quichotte" produced for the Paris Opera Ballet is a miracle of dancing and story-telling. Nureyev, we are told, was addicted to old Hollywood musicals and in this ballet it shows. The routines of the corps de ballet are amazing in their complexity and fluidity, clearly owing much to Busby Berkeley. The corps are as much stars of the show as are the etoiles, but the etoiles are magnificent. Jean-Guillaume Bart as Espada the toreador has a swaggering insolence and precision of line equalled only by Marie-Agnes Gillot, the "street dancer" who partners him.

However, it is the dancing of Manuel Legris and Aurelie Dupont, Basile and Kitri, that is a wonder to behold. They are perfectly matched and move in total harmony throughout. Legris who, we are told by one critic, "is in the autumn of his career" dances his socks off with a brio and perfection seldom seen anywhere. The total production is so funny it makes one laugh, and the dancing so close to the Platonic Ideal that it makes one want to cry at its beauty. Few productions ever lift the spirits as this one does. We should thank God for the Paris Opera Ballet and its dancers, and for Nureyev who lives on in this production. Buy it now. 5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Glorious, 22 Mar 2005
By A Customer
Aurelie Dupont & Manuel Legris outperform themselves - perfectly matched and happy, and glorious dancing. The joy of the whole performance is infectious and one can hear the audience warming bit by bit until eventually they seem to be standing on their seats.
All the other main characters are outstanding -- Marie-Agnes Gillot, Jean-Guillaume Bart, Melanie Hurel & Veronique Doisneau (the two friends), Fanny Fiat, Delphine Moussin, Clairmarie Osta, Karl Paquette -- and on and on.
The colour, the movement, the occasional slapstick.
Why is Sancho dressed as Friar Tuck??
The corps de ballet are a joy to watch. The music is easy on the ear. The sets are wonderful.
As another viewer said 'thank God for the Paris Ballet'.
Buy it! Revel in it! Luxuriate in it! Tell your friends about it.
Enjoy Ms Dupont & M Legris.
