This is one of the finest recording of Beethoven's piano sonatas I have ever heard. The Appassionata is staggering in the studio performance and in the live bonus recording. As with Pollini's account of the Liszt Bm sonata, the Appassionata builds from the explosive outbursts of the first movement to well beyond where this listener thought it possible to go in terms of controlled passion and insight. Again, its not as if Pollini has "got inside" Beethoven, its the other way around. Beethoven seems to have got inside Pollini and used Pollini's gifts to display his genius.

I can understand those who have accused Pollini in the past of coldness and 'mere' virtuosity but I disagreed with them then - I felt they were missing a huge opportunity to hear masterpieces cleaned of years of grime. This CD demonstrates what I mean very nicely. Pollini is unique!
