5.0 out of 5 stars Music maybe not of the first rank, but the recording is!, 12 May 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
f you've hesitated to get this because the music is unfamiliar, hesitate no longer. This is a beautifully shaped and played performance of exciting music given well-nigh IMPECCABLE DSD recording and SACD sound.

The music is a sort of combination of Rimsky K (think Scheherazade) and Sibelius (think Lemminkaienen legends). It's long and often broody, picaresque and pictorial narrative with some powerful climaxes. Maybe not music of the first rank (well, to be honest, definitely not of the first rank) but well worth a listen.

The performance seems excellent. I wasn't familiar with either the piece or with the alternative recordings, so I can't compare, but the standard references give this one the palm and I can hear why. Maestro Botstein manages to keep the huge and sprawling canvass under control and the LSO clearly have a great - but tightly disciplined - time. If I missed anything, it was a bit more vulgarity or hysteria from time to time, but that's being greedy. I have two other Botstein discs (Reger and Bartok) both with the London Phil. and both recorded in DSD by Telarc but, sadly, not released on SACD. I'd love to hear him and either orchestra in Sibelius, preferably at this venue and with this engineer and producer.

The disc is cut at relatively low volume and you might find it initially seems distant or muffled. I assure you that its not. Even when all is quiet, you can hear every note, every instrument, and the last, apocalyptic bass and percussion chords of the 4th movement (about 5 minutes from the end) will hit you in the spine and the stomach. As you will have gathered, dynamic range is huge.

The soundstage is high, wide and handsome. The strings have a lovely sheen but plenty of attack. Throughout, there is always power in reserve, and whether in quieter or louder passages all instruments tell but all are in natural and balanced dynamic relationship to each other. And, unlike so many other DSD recorded SACDs, the sound is naturally but unobtrusively warm, - not over-reverberant but warm.

At the same time, everything is also clean and clear without being at all cold or clinical, or too close or over-centred. In short, as H.E. Bates' Pa Larkin would have said, "its perfic, ma, just perfic".

Hats off to Botstein and the LSO but a special bravo to Telarc and to recording engineer (Everett Porter of Polyhymnia) and producer (James Mallinson). This is everything that DSD promised - natural sound and dynamics in a great acoustic with no gimmicks, hysteria or over-manipulation. Now all we need is more recordings of first-rank music.

Wooly sound and played much too fast. Get the Downes CD version on Chandos instead.
