4.0 out of 5 stars Better than cossacks, 18 Feb 2003
This is one hell of a RTS, and in the true sense aswell, as it is in 2D. The advantage of this is that the animation of the soldiers and such is fantastic, even down to the riders patting their horses when idle. The game play is very similar to Cossacks, however one of the biggest differences is the 'FEAR' factor, this means that your individual units can get scared and run off, this adds alot more stragedy to the game. Also there can be up to 16,000 units in use at one time.
As I said earlier the game is in 2D not your 3D like the later RTS's, for example the new C&C Generals, don't let this put you off, the graphics work really well, and it does give you the option to zoom right out and view the battle from a satalite view. The single player campaigns are really fun spanning 300 years, however the real fun comes into it when you play Multiplayer, this can get hectic but great fun.
To finish off, if you like RTS games then it is worth the purchase, especially if you are a fan of Cossacks, if this is the case BUY IT!!, the only downside is that it does not give you a lot more than cossacks did, but I don't think that is a bad thing, as it is just as playable....In my opinion this is a great game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - needs some improvements, 30 Jul 2003
By Alliance (Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As an owner of the previous cossacks games i found AC a great game, it has everything cossacks has and more. The game is very realistic and quite true to life in that period. The things I have always dreamed about in those kind of games though are taking prisoners and having the cowards that run away shot, that would be my ideal strategy game but other than that AC is good. It can get hard at times and very intense but is very enjoyable that is why i gave it a 4/5 it would have been a 5/5 if it had included my criteria but that is my opinion.
One to buy, look forward to its stand alone expansion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Era of RTS Games!, 10 Feb 2003
By Mr. C. J. Read "_maxxy_" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
CDV revolutionise the Real-Time Strategy genre once more, with only a few big games under there belt (the outstanding Sudden Strike series and the follow up Cossacks games), CDV are fast making a name for themselves in the real-time stratagy genre. There lastest effort is this, American Conquest, which takes you back to 1492 along with Christopher Columbus and the gang.

Yes, this time you won't be fighting Nazis or Russians, but you will be igniting the fire that will fan 300 years of conflict in the good old USA. American Conquest contains 8 HUGE historical campaigns that span a total of 42 varying missions, giving giving you the chance to play as American legends such as Pizarro and even Washington. The real-time battles you'll face in this title are truly epic - up to 16,000 units (in Microsofts Age of Mythology only 3600 units could be on the battlefield, a max of 300 per player, although this number can'not be reached because there are not enough settlements, and in Empire Earth only 1800 units) can now clash on the battlefield, for land, riches and FREEDOM!

Spanning from 1492 to 1813, you can replay classic conflicts like the Seven Years War and the American War of Independence, joining or fighting against 12 different nations and tribes, including Spain, England, France, Aztecs, Incas and of course, the ubiquitous Americans... Well it would'nt work without them...

For a genre that's often thought of as "dull" by some people , a game like American Conquest could really open a few eyes. The yells and warcries emitted from the battlefield really add to the atmosphere - make no mistake, it's not a case of style over substance, because CDV's latest is packed full of tactical formations, clever A.I and over 100 different units and localised buildings, so you'll never have the same battle twice, and if you have'nt checked the screenshots already, do so NOW, they are truly amazing, and they look even better moving.

American Conquest is packed to the teeth with tactical know-how, so any old hands will instantly get to grips with the control system and be fighting raging battles in no time. It's not all mindless gunplay either, all units can fight with cold steel and morale is influenced by numerous factors - victory, defeat, food, supplies ect. A great online multi-player mode just about wraps up a great real-time stratagy package - Conquer it ASAP!
