4.0 out of 5 stars Two solid concertos., 4 Sep 2009
Robert Fuchs was a friend of Brahms. His only piano concerto was written under Brahms' scrutiny and received his approval. It is a fine, very well constructed and sustained work. However, any composer who set out to write in the style of Brahms had given himself a particularly difficult task because Brahms' qualities do not reside on the surface and Fuchs never really comes close to matching Brahms' piano concertos in terms of melodic memorability or resourcefulness in development. The concerto opens with a substantial sonata form movement built on a strong rhythmical main theme. There is the usual double exposition and a number of moderately attractive subsidiary ideas. The slow movement is built around a chorale which will immediately remind you of the slow movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony. The sleevenote writer suggests that it is a ternary structure but I heard it as more of a set of uninterrupted variations. The version of the tune (or, if you go along with the alternative analysis, the return to the opening) at 6 mins 4 secs is absolutely lovely and the highlight of the concerto. The finale is an easily followed rondo.

Friedrich Kiel was another mid-Romantic German composer who is largely forgotten today. His piano concerto has similar strengths and weaknesses to the one by Fuchs. The first movement, which the sleevenote writer suggests is influenced by Beethoven, is not strong melodically but is well constructed and has a number of unusual features including an orchestral exposition to which the soloist contributes, and an inverted recapitulation. The brief slow movement creates a lovely mood but is again not memorable melodically. The finale, which, curiously, the notes liken to a toccata, has a strong main idea but the episodes, to quote the sleevenote writer, are "not very profound".
These are really fine performances and recordings and I would suggest you investigate this disc for the sake of the Fuchs concerto in particular.
