One of the best modern piano works I have ever heard. Book I grabs your attention right from the start, with a polyrhythmic study where the left hand plays only white keys and the right hand plays only black keys. Book II leaves you wanting more at the end with the violent, perpetually moving Etudes XIV and XIVa. Ligeti's Etudes are certainly a good introduction and springboard into his other works. The two books have it all - sedate trips into Ligeti's musical language, free flowing dynamic pieces, violence allied with calm (juxtaposition of emotions could be seen as a Ligeti trademark). Idil Biret does an exceptional job to play these etudes, especially considering Etude XIVa was composed for Nancarrow's player piano. It's the sort of achievement which inspires you to go further in exploring post-modern musical technique, on any instrument. The pieces require attentive listening, but the experience is very rewarding. Overall, excellent composition, excellent recording. Let's hope Ligeti finishes Book III soon!
