Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Get the best of both worlds, a shared ADSL connection along with wired and wireless network capabilities with the NetGear DG824M.

Why limit your ADSL connection to just one computer? An ADSL modem gateway is a device that sits between your ADSL enabled phone-line and the various computers in your home. The DG824M from NetGear is a 4-in-1 gateway that combines an ADSL modem, a wireless base station, a wired four-port switch and a basic hardware firewall. This multifunction device can answer almost all of your home or small business connectivity requirements. Technically this single device will allow you to connect up to 253 devices to the Internet using a single ADSL connection, either wirelessly or over your wired network.

Setting up should be complex for such a device but is made incredibly simple thanks to NetGear's standard installation wizard, which is similar across all of its home products. As the installation is Web based you don't even need to install any software and it'll work with any OS, not just Windows. Almost all the settings are detected automatically, meaning you only have to enter your ADSL username and password to get things working.

The wireless base station is 802.11b, as with other base stations you get full 128-bit WEP security plus the ability to assign specific MAC address to limit wireless access to specific network cards. The only real limitation is that only 32 users can connect wirelessly to the gateway.

As for the switch, you get four-wired LAN ports. It offers Internet protection with full NAT and Firewall features. The Firewall is more advanced than previous models with separate inbound and outbound configurations, plus filtering available for WAN and LAN areas using individual or a range of IP addresses. Plus basic Web site blocking and filtering based on content or time of day.

Such an integrated device does pose a problem with positioning as you may have problems with wireless reception. However, the built-in aerial can be removed and replaced with an external one, while NetGear will be offering its own aerial solutions. This is a superb, easy to use, good-looking device but with 802.11 g devices now available you may want to consider one of these faster devices. --Nick Baxter

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of equipment, 30 April 2003
By Tim Weber (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Netgear DG824M is a pretty brilliant piece of equipment. It's so easy to set up that I managed to connect to my broadband connection within 3 minutes of switching the equipment on ...

There was only one hitch: I couldn't configure the gateway through my wireless link, but had to use the standard cable network connection (cable came with the router - and I even could hook up a Win95 PC to the router, even though officially support starts from Win98 onwards).

Thanks to XP on my main PC, getting wireless was very straightforward - the PCI Wifi card recognised the gateway immediately. Do follow the detailed manual (on the system CD) to make your Wifi connection secure, but it's all very straightforward and does not require a degree in advanced computing to get it sorted.

Wifi connectivity: No problems whatsoever. My DG824M is on the first floor of a three storey townhouse. I get excellent or good reception in every part of the house & in our garden. It only gets down to low quality reception (which doesn't really hit connection speeds for my needs) when I turn my computer so that the full PC is between the DG824M and the wifi antenna of the PCI card.

One Problem: The Firmware (software) that's on the DG824M was a bit outdated, and I had a few problems configuring the firewall and getting the time and date set for the router - until I realised that there's an update available on the Netgear web site (search for version 1.3 of the Firmware). Once that was installed (again, a very straightforward thing to do) all my problems went away.

Overall, an excellent piece of equipment, a very good firewall, great internet connection speeds, and I've now got a number for computers on the web without a hitch.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best around, 30 Aug 2003
This is such a good value all-in-one product, it's hard to find fault with it. If you want to go wireless and share your Broadband connection (unless it's AOL!) then buy this.

One thing to remember though is that you must upgrade the firmware straight away to get the benefit of more robust wireless connections and reliability. A visit to the Netgear website will point you to the download. Another point to bear in mind is that you must configure the router with a wired Ethernet connection as it describes in the setup guide. Doing it by wireless can cause problems. You can always take out the Ethernet cable afterwards and just have wireless connections going if you want.

I find the firewall facility to be excellent. You will not need a software firewall with this product so if you already have one I would uninstall it before you set the router up. This also helps when it comes to file sharing, the software firewall may give you problems as it did with me.

Now I can surf the net on my main PC, the laptop and my PDA anywhere in the house. I even went down to the shed at the bottom of my 60 metre garden and it worked flawlessly! Take note though that if you implement WEP security the range and speed will decrease. That aside, this is a brilliant piece of kit and so easy to set up. Top marks!

3.0 out of 5 stars Check before you go wireless!, 13 Mar 2003
By AnnGalpin (Cookham, Berks United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As an adsl port and ethernet switch/ router/ firewall this kit is hard to fault. Its easy to set up and certainly communicates with my printer even faster than the old parallel connection. An excellent heldesk too which helped me prove that the problem I did have was with the BT exchange not my kit.

However its as a wireless device where it comes unstuck. Basically forget all about the claims of distance unless you live in a typical wooden framed American house with plastic pipes. As soon as you get into a brick built UK house, with copper pipes, hot water tank, metal radiators or central chimney breast, all of which soak up the signal like mad its not so simple. I have tried 20 different locations in the house and the furthest I can get it to work is 10 meters. Fine if your house is square and you can put the modem in the middle, useless if its a bit oblong and the unit has to be at one end. Other manufacturers offer directional aerials to boost the signal to help with this but not Netgear. Shame really, I'm going back to ethernet only, but still with a similar Netgear modem minus the wireless.
