Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
In Detroit Experiment a varied cast of Detroit players were thrown into a studio for a few days to see what would happen. Produced by techno pioneer Carl Craig, the line up includes jazz heavies (reedist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Geri Allen, and violin sensation Regina Carter), Motown session players (guitarist Percy Hughes and drummer Ron Otis), and various hip-hop and electronic people. The result is a tidy musical package crammed with rich ambient textures, percolating rhythms (stellar percussionist Francisco Mora sees to that), and strong grooves that still leave enough room for the jazz folk to solo comfortably. Ranging from the smooth-jazz-like "Revelation" to the interstellar bop of "Space Odyssey" to the outright hip-hop of "The Way We Make Music" to a surreal reading of Stevie Wonder's "Too High," the 14 tracks here have a little something for everyone, without sacrificing quality. Rarely has this new electro-jazz-hip-hop hybrid had such soul, but what else would you expect from Detroit? --Tad Hendrickson

4.0 out of 5 stars Motor City's Burning, 22 Mar 2003
This album is one of those jamboree sessions, where a producer hijacks a studio and invites his alltime favorites to come play. Hal Willner, for instance, has being at it for years (I'd recommend his 'Weird Nightmare' tribute to Mingus). There's the Buena Vista Social Club, too. The thing is, the approach tends to work, the eclectic mix of masters spark off each other and the tunes they bounce about. The Detroit Experiment works, the musical glue being an apoxy of Detroit Sounds (Jazz, blues, funk, house, hiphop). Carl Craig has allowed his studio-rent party enough free will to come on fresh and unabashed, but one suspects the resultant tapes were wayward. But, Mr Craig has cut and pasted, done the full Bonsai, on those DATs and crafted a deft album of immaculate Detroit noise. Motor City's beat-bop is driven, it vibrates and hums like gigantic alternator, it is electric, but it's a tangy as diesel. This is a product of industry, a signifer of all things Detroit, it essense, it's essential. Buy into it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Still thinking..., 11 Mar 2004
I'm not fully convinced with this album. I brought this after hearing some on Gile P...

Got the album listen to it at home, in the car, working, tried to dj to it... It hasn't hit me that this is a great album or a bad one. I only heard snipets of The Philly Expermient which I liked but this... its Jazz/Funk/Urban/Soul but missing something to me...

Give it a listen but I wouldn't say put yourself out to buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Carl Craig explores his roots, 2 Jul 2003
No exactly what you might expect from one of Techno's pioneers even though Carl Craig's love of Jazz is no secret. The sleeve notes say that all the taped sessions that had been recorded for this project were handed to Carl who then spent the next four months adding a taste of the future to the musical past. So far so good & it all sounds extremely promising. However, The end result is a bit predictable as is often the case with this kind of project. Think Masters at work's Nu Yorican soul project & your a long way to understanding how the Detroit experiment turned out. It's more Planet Jazz than Planet E which may be a little dissapointing to fans of Carl Craig's incredibly forward thinking Detroit, Techno Grooves. There are some classic moments on this LP were the Carl Craig/Planet E vibe really start to shine through but for the most part it's just not evident enough for my liking.

The production quality on this LP is amazing & as an Urban Jazz LP It does stand out from the crowd as something that pushes things forward somewhat. In that respect it's a complete success & fans of the genre will almost certainly hail it as such. Carl Craig's input is fairly subtle for the most part which again is a good thing for this LP - It's just that Carl Craig/Planet E fans may be a little suprised with what's on offer here. Innerzone Orchestra it is not.

To sum up I'd say that this LP is to Urban Jazz what Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra is to Detroit techno. Forward thinking? Yes, But just not for the Planet E crowd.
