Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There's plenty of software around to help aspiring Eric Claptons master their first E major, or wiggle their first wah wah pedal--the Finale Guitar platform is virtually unique in guiding would-be axe-heroes through the confusing world of guitar notation.

The key to the Finale method is an interface that allows you to play directly from a MIDI instrument onto your computer, whereupon the software will automatically convert your notes into proper notation (or TAB). You can also scan sheet music, or click notes in with a mouse. Once you've accomplished that, you can master the more refined techniques. Move notes to neighbouring strings by using the cursor keys; edit TAB notes with a simple keypush; specify frets for those jazzier melodies; notate your own staccati, crescendi and glissandi; even watch with horror as the notator diligently takes down your bum notes. And should you get bored of that old axe, Guitar Finale is also configured for a multitude of other stringed instruments--banjo, dulcimer, lute, mandolin and so on--as well as a plethora of non-fretted instruments, from handbells to percussion, from woodwind to flugelhorn (well, maybe not the last). And when you've assembled your one-man-band, and notated your musical noodlings, you can then print out your achievements and publish them on the Net: maybe even, indeed, on Finale Showcase "the world's gathering place for sharing great sheet music".

But is Finale Guitar the best in the market? That's tricky to say because the only direct competitor is Finale Allegro, the more expensive and slightly more sophisticated predecessor to this very software. --Sean Thomas

Manufacturer's Description

Until recently, guitarists had to invest in the most sophisticated and expensive score writing packages to get access to the guitar-specific features that they needed. Finale Guitar collects all of the essential tools for creating accurate, attractive guitar notation, without all the unnecessary features used by orchestral arrangers and engravers. This makes for a streamlined, easy to use package, with hundreds of useful guitar functions at your fingertips, at an incredibly affordable price.

Guitar TAB Enter notes directly into TAB staves, or between a companion Standard Notation Staff and a TAB staff. Specify the lowest fret to use as you paste.

Once the music is in the TAB staff, it is supremely easy and intuitive to edit. For example, to change a fret number from ‘2’ to ‘3’, just select the note and type ‘3’. Up and Down arrow keys move a selected number to other strings. Numbers appear in orange when out of fret range.

Create your own fretboards Even though Finale Guitar comes with thousands of fret diagrams to choose from, you can easily customise your own multiple fretboards for named chords and save them in your own transposable groups.

Bends and Shapes automatically convert When you paste between Standard and TAB staves. Notating Hammer-ons, Pull-offs, Bends and Releases is a breeze.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a buy!, 1 April 2003

At last a programe that is easy to use for guitarists like myself. It is one of the easiest and most complete notation and tablature software for fretted instruments. It gives all the tools to write your own music with good quality, so it looks profesional. This is worth a buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, and so useful, 18 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Turns MIDI files into 6 string tab for guitar, or any other kind of tab (Ravi Shankar or Vilayat Khan tuning on your sitar, sir?). Really easy to use, all of the orchestra type notation seems to be there (I'm not really a musician - just a guitarist!) and it was dead cheap. My printouts look just like the guitar tab bits in the magazines. Ace. And it's cheap. I'm a happy man!

1.0 out of 5 stars Missed the point, 20 Aug 2007
By Mr. Ht Knott "Guitarboy" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a guitar website developer and needed this software to provide tablature for lessons, exercises and riffs. Naturally I needed something very flexible for these various tasks. First off, I was very pleased with this product. It was easy to use, had an abundance of features including midi playback so I could hear what I had written, and helped me notate thing very quickly.

As other reviewers of this product mentioned, it was the specifically guitar related features that let me down. It gives you the chance to write music for hundreds of instruments and arrange entire orchestras and yet doesn't have the facility to tab seven string guitars or guitars in tunings such as drop C and E flat standard. Also, it could not tab mutes or vibrato bar manoeuvres. So all of these features I cannot display on my website.

As for the general workings of the software there was little control over the layout and even simple features were sometimes needlessly complicated. I was shocked at the amount of features that no guitarists would ever use whilst not catering for the simplest of guitarists needs.

To be fair if I wasn't a guitarist this software would have been amazing, I would've given it 4 or 5 stars. But I am, so there's not a chance I can give this software any credit.

I am not saying you should not buy this software. Keep in mind that this is the only software I have tried. If you're a musician this software is great. If you're a guitarist with only simple tablature requirements this software is also great. However, anything complex or unique to guitar is beyond this piece of software.

In short: If this was notation sofware it would be great, but it makes out like it is specifically designed for guitars - which it is not. IF EVER THERE WAS A PIECE OF SOFTWARE THAT MISSED THE POINT IT IS FINALE GUITAR!
