5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Showbusiness becomes Disco Diva, 2 Aug 2004
By A. D. Blackburn "A. D. Blackburn" (Ayrshire, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well it had to happen sometime. This was a bold venture by A&M
at the height of Disco boom to issue this item. To have Varese
issue this some 23 years later gives one room for thought. These
songs are Ethel Merman's property and I suppose she must have sung them in many different arrangements. Who else could do a disco version of 'There's No Business Like Show Business' 'Everything's Coming Up Roses' and 'Alexander's Ragtime
Band'. This is an album you will either love or hate - Ethel

brought out that feeling with the general public. However,
once your toes start tapping and you get used to the 'new' arrangements I think you will love it. Peter Matz's arrangements
are marvellous, to quote Ethel in regard to her singing in general 'I just stand there and holler'. Holler maybe, but this is great fun and it comes over as such. The sleeve note quotes
several Disco Divas comments, the only name I recognise being Donna Summer, the others are forgotten. Something Ethel is not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Merman's certainly got rhythm!, 25 Oct 2005
By GEORGE LYALL "georgelyall1234" (Kilmarnock) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Years ago, I received a letter from a trader informing me they had located an album of Ethel Merman singing disco - yeah right, I thought! Sure enough the album wung..winged..wotever(!) it's way to me and there was the great Merman in all her glory belting out her most famous songs to a stomping disco beat! This CD issue is fantastic, from the extra photos in the packaging to the extra track "They Say It's Wonderful". Ethel certainly knew how to entertain and there is not a duff track on this album. OK, it's as camp as a row of tents, but anyone who isn't tapping their feet or shaking their booty in the first few minutes - WOTS WRONG WIV YA??! Ethel, you certainly did have rhythm and there was no business like show business when you were around. Buy this album and see how disco SHOULD be done!
