Augghh! What nitwit designed this cover? OK, OK, calmness, rationality.

This is not music played on the plectrum guitar, as the picture indicates. Nor is it music played on the baroque guitar (the ancestor of the modern classical guitar), as the title seems to indicate. Nor, with the exception of the pieces by Sanz & de Visée, it is even music written *for* the baroque guitar.

What it is (with the exception of the Sor, which is out-of-place) is Baroque music, mostly written for the lute, played on a modern classical guitar by one of the finest guitarists in the World.

I don't possess this particular disc, but I do possess all the recordings in other manifestations. They're around 40 years old, so the expostulations about 24-bit sound also need to be taken with a grain of salt.

That said, this collection of Bream's early recordings looks like excellent value: 10 tracks may not seem like much, but the Lute Suite alone runs over 19 minutes.

It seems petty to deduct a star for the cretinous cover, so five stars it is.

(P.S. I see that the American edition on amazon.com has a picture of baroque guitarists on the front. Go figure.)
