Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Pokémon Sapphire and Ruby's updated graphics, with weather effects, amazing sound and more than 200 Pokémon with over 100 new species, make for a welcome evolution in the series.

The game has a lot in common with previous Pokémon games Silver, Gold and Crystal. For example, players can choose to be a boy or a girl trainer, an internal clock sets events at certain times and the game's handy-dandy Pokédex helps players keep track of the many stats. Your main goal is still to beat all the Gym Trainers and become the Pokémon Master, and as before you can trade Pokémon via the Link Cable--both Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire include exclusive Pokémon, and you'll find that some species are common in one game and rare in the other. So if you've played the old games, you'll be right at home. But not all is the same.

The most obvious change is in the battles themselves. Now that two Pokémon can fight on your side at the same time, you can tag-team them against an enemy by taking advantage of the strengths of your Pokémons while covering their weaknesses. For example, you can now have a water Pokémon watch your fire Pokémon's back. You can also attack more than one Pokémon at a time.

A whole new element to the games focuses on how berries are used in battle. And if you collect enough berries, you can take them to a Berry Blender and make a PokéBlock, which is a little super-charged sweet that raises your Pokémon's "Condition" attributes. You can then groom your Pokémon for regional contests and compete for ribbons like "Best of Show", which will unlock additional contests. There's even strategy in how to best use your berries: pick too many and the berry tree will disappear; plant berries, though, and a tree will grow. You can also build a Secret Base in special areas of the game, which you can decorate just like you can your room.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire have a great multi-player system, too; you can link up to four players for incredible battles. The only downside is that you can't link up with the old Game Boy Color games. --Bryan Karsh

5.0 out of 5 stars a great game!!!, 22 April 2003
By a gamer (Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire are 2 great games that a big improvement on the previous Pokemon titles - the best improvements being the new Pokemon, Pokemon Contests and 2-on-2 trainer battles. There's hours of gameplay in it - I haven't even beaten the Elite Four on my copy of Pokemon Sapphire yet, and I've already spent over 40 hours playing!

The only downside is the fact that you can't trade with older versions of the Pokemon games and that you can only actually catch 200 Pokemon because many of the older Pokemon can't be caught (they've been programmed into the games, but you can't catch them without using a Gameshark). This leaves a big question about how to catch these Pokemon though... perhaps they will be unlocked with a Gamecube game in the future??? I hope so!

After saying this though, if you've enjoyed the other Pokemon titles, you won't be disappointed. This is well worth your money, and not to be missed by Pokemon fans.

When I got this game from america i thought that it would just be exactly te same as the old ones except with new pokémon.
but it wasnt!!!it is so different!!i had no idea you were'nt
playing the game in johto anymore, now its in a place called
hoenn(i think thats how u spell it.)anyway i chose torchic as a
starter and now i wish i hadnt becoz this is a really bad starter
as it is useless against the first gym..im gonna buy pokémon ruby

2.0 out of 5 stars not really for 3 year olds, 25 Jul 2003
bought game on line, really because of all the hype and my four year old son loves his pokemon stacks. dissapointed once recieved as he like i said is only four and yet although the game is advertised as 3+ is clearly not, lots of words throughout even the first few bits of game, he was getting more and more upset as we tried to play it together. had game included some indication of what it contained i may have been able to turn him away from it, like i said a little more than dissapointed, sure older kids will think its great
