4.0 out of 5 stars What a line up..., 30 Jan 2004
By A Customer
The title 'Echoes of an era', really does sum up this record. It was made by the efforts of Lenny White getting some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world in 1982 together, and making a tribute to the era before their own, and in the process defining their own enormous talent.

This record is just fun. White's intention was to recreate the session's of the likes of Billie Holiday and he does so fantasticly with the charisma of Chaka Chan on nearly every track. The spiky and then flowing piano of Chick Corea especially on Thelonius Monk's 'I mean you' and 'Take the A train'. The well rehearsed rhythm's of Lenny White and Stanley Clarke, looking back to their Return to Forever day's, fits nicely into the blend. My personal highlight of the album, is 'I Hear Music' when both Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard really let lose on the tune.

This is not what one might expect from the line up and when I first heard the record I was shocked, but pleasently surprised. For jazz lovers of the 50's and beyond, and for those interested in what the line up themselves love, this is a great record. It also shows the enormous talent these musicians had, as they managed to create such a record in just a couple of days. The vinyl remains truer to the sound the musicians were probably trying to get, never the less it remains a tribute to one generation from the next.
