2.0 out of 5 stars Superficial readings, 10 Aug 2009
By Tancredi (Manchester) - See all my reviews
I bought this recording to fill a gap in my collection, Bergs Lulu Symphonie, and because it was so cheap.

Well I now see why its so cheap, this will never be popular repertoire but when you get to know it, it is far far deeper music than this superficial play through reveals.

I possess Dorati and Boulez in the Schoenberg and both in their different ways are far superior. In the Berg Rattle frequently ignores Bergs careful markings and often their is no separation of the part writing, a sort of general romantic wash of sound

The recording is very thick and airless, you have to turn it up very loud to hear some parts at all, but still there is a deadness about it. The CBSO are fine as is the brief contribution of Arleen Auger.

Avoid, despite the glowing reviews at the time in the Gramaphone, the reviewer at Amazon.fr gets it just right.
