Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

NBA Street 2 is the best basketball game yet. Although it's an official NBA product, the fact that it is playground-based liberates this from the confines of fan reverence. Instead, especially in the "Be a Legend" option, it has a great sense of humour about itself. The boss of each city, once defeated, can be added to the player's roster--and although they are caricatures, they're fondly and funnily done. Among the best are Stretch (a dunker from Harlem), Dime (a female ball-stealer who resembles the singer Pink) and Osmosis (an Oakland version of "It" player Yao Ming).

Parents couldn't find a more kid or teen-friendly game. There's no adult language, and the colourful commentary is fantastic. It's much improved from the original game's repetitive "MJ, go on with yo bad self" patter. Bobbito Garcia, a real-life streetball announcer, should get a "nice work" bonus. For that matter, so should the ambience-noise guys, who included, for example, a single cellphone ring in the background.

Those not inclined to love sports games should trust in NBA Street 2--it's visually brilliant, witty and addictive. True basketball fans should get this game immediately, if not sooner. They'll best appreciate that all the old-time players have their moment in the sun; for example, 5,000 points unlocks Dr J, and a billboard between sets advertises Bill Russell and other pioneers. Classic hip-hop from artists such as MC Lyte rounds out the impressive package. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Official PlayStation 2 Magazine

"A lightning-fast celebration of on-court invention freed from the didactic tedium of the NBA rulebook. 8/10."

5.0 out of 5 stars NBA STREET 2!!!, 11 Jun 2003
NBA returns to the streets - and now it's hipper, flyer and, err, more dope than ever before. It's basketball with all the boring rules torn out; replaced instead with wild dunks, alley-oops and the single greatest commentary track of all time. Where else can you hear lines like, "Mmm, that'd go nice with potatoes."?
The game revolves around the use of turbo buttons to pump your player up to more and more extravagent moves. The more outrageous moves will fill up the Gamebreaker bar quicker, but are also more likely to be blocked. One full Gamebreaker bar allows you to nominate your next attempt at the basket to be worth 5 points, thereby breaking the game. Clever that.

The added reward for playing with flair adds another element to the game. It's no use sticking with boring and simple dunks when your opponent is turbo blocking, going round the mountain, bouncing off your Heezay and scoring with a double Gamebreaker. Whereas in other games fancy skills are their own reward, here they are a vital part of getting the job done.

There are current and classic NBA players available, as well as the now pre-requisite create-a-character, allowing you to create your own b-baller. All the NBA teams are represented in their 'Street' guises, and you must go through each team as you would a level before challenging for the Street championship. The multiplayer is especially frantic and entertaining, especially when you have three of your mates tossing the orb.

The EA BIG line have a reputation for providing high-tempo, jacked-up sports games (just look at SSX). NBA Street 2 stays true to this trend. There are loads of NBA goodies to unlock for the dedicated basketball fans, while even rookies will get loads from the exciting, fast-paced gameplay. This is the Michael Jordan of basketball games.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Butter, 7 May 2003
If you liked/remember NBA Jam then you'll love this! This is B-Ball for serious players, nba has not only taken B-Ball to the streets, but back to basics too.
As you'd expect (from EA) this game is fully licensed, featuring both classic ballers, and current nba stars, as well as featured artists and the characters from street vol 1.
This game exudes class from the moment it loads up, the title tracks feature nelly and redman etc and the main menu sees you 'flying' round a few city blocks to get to each sub-menu which is a very cool effect.
The in-game graphics are nothing short of breath-taking, the characters while still somewhat 'characatured' are still surprisingly life-like, and the backgrounds are a pleasure to behold, right down to cars going past in the background and people cheering and reacting when you slam home a super-dunk combo!
Gameplay consists of standard street B-Ball (although you can switch on NBA scoring), and makes the game all the better for it, the simple approach leaves you more time to string together, tricks, dishes, kick=passes and alley-oops till you finally score to whoops of delight from the commentator (DJ Cucumber Slice)... And this is what trasforms this game from 'good' to 'outstanding', DJ Cucumber Slice (Bad name) makes this game fast, frentic and fun, his non-stop commentary on everything happening on court. He disses, cheers, chats, sings, and names various food-stuffs without ever feeling like he's repeating himself, add to this his pre-match chatter and character specific comments and this game brings you right to the street when you play it, making it feel like you're court-side!
The game-breakers play an integral part to this game, and closely matched players will only be separated by who's got skills and who hasn't (you need to trick/pull off combos to build this bar), the gamebreaker essentially adds to your score while subtracting from the other teams changing the course of a game in a single bucket. This is a feature i'm not too keen on, mainly because they're supposed to be spectacular but end up being rather boring and repetative (about the only part of the game that is!) and while it's great to come back from 5 points down in a single shot it doesn't make you feel rewarded for pulling it off for some wierd reason....
Aside from this you cannot fault this game, graphics, sounds and gameplay are simply too good to be true, buy this game and you'll spend all summer inside!
