Synopsis

French writer-director Jean-Marie Poire retools his 1993 European box-office hit comedy, LES VISITEURS, with the two original stars, Jean Reno (THE PROFESSIONAL) and Christian Clavier (who co-wrote both films and is France's answer to Jim Carrey) reprising their roles. On the eve of his wedding, 12th Century knight Count Thibault of Malfete (Reno), mistakenly kills his beloved Princess Rosalind (Christina Applegate), while under an evil spell. Grief-stricken, Thibault enlists a wizard (Malcolm McDowell) to send him back in time to avert the murder. When the wizard's potion malfunctions, Thibault and his faithful servant, Andre (Clavier) are deposited in 21st Century Chicago, where they meet museum curator Julia Malfete (Applegate), who is the living image of Rosalind. Believing Thibault to be an eccentric cousin, Julia takes the bewildered Frenchmen home, where they encounter (and destroy) a vast array of modern conveniences. Desperate to return to his proper time, Thibault enlists Julia's help against the wishes of her controlling, money-hungry fiance, Hunter (Matthew Ross). Meanwhile, Andre falls for a pretty, free-spirited gardener, Angelique (Tara Reid). This slapstick, fish-out-of-water comedy-fantasy introduces American audiences to one of the French film industry's most successful writer-director-comedian teams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Visiting is here to stay!, 6 Feb 2003
For a children's film, i was very pleasantly surprised with this offering from Jean Reno, not normally given to this kind of comedy role. Admittedly it is nearly all slapstick, as you would expect from a children's comedy, but unlike most slapstick children's comedy, a lot of it is actually funny, and doesn't make you cringe to watch it.

The basic premise is a good one, although it has been done many times before. a medieaval knight and his servant are somehow sent forward in time to the present day, and nearly all the film's gags centre round these to medieaval misfits and their interpretation of 21st century life, along with all our modern inventions. It is genuinely funny. For instance the scenes with the toilet mints (wait and see!) and the attempt to free those 'held prisoner' inside the television really work, and have to be seen to believed, and laughed at.

The acting and casting is good, in particular the gorgeous Tara Reid, who looks especially stunning in this movie, along with Christina Applegate, who also looks pretty good.

I must admit i don't normally like this kind of films because the humour is so obvious and in-your-face, but it is how children like it. I really would recommend this flim to all parents, as your child will want to watch it over and over again. My little brother certainly did. There are the inevitable bodily function jokes, which always cracks him and all other young children up. But credit where credit's due, i didn't expect to, but i really did enjoy this film, and can quite happily watch this film again and again.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fast and funny remake of a French cinematic masterpiece, 7 Feb 2003
Just Visiting is a witty rehash of a winning French movie first aired at the Cannes Festival. Upgraded for the new millenium, it features much of the same storyline and jokes, but in English. Set in America, the story revolves around brave mediaeval knight Thibault (Reno), and his squire Andre (Clavier) who are thrust into the future by a spell gone wrong (English wizards... huh!). Much hilarity ensues as the duo must find a way to return home, and survive the many sights and sounds of a modern day city.

The DVD itself is very slim on extras, but this really is a funny film. However, it is not nearly as good as the original Les Visiteurs, which although outdated, contains Reno and Clavier at their comic best. This movie is a rehash, and indeed FEELS like a rehash as it is obvious to the viewer that Reno and Clavier have done all of this before.

This is, however, a very funny film and I would recommend it to you all. I still prefer Les Visiteurs, but if you're not a fan of French films at all, then by all means give this a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Worthy of mention is Malcolm McDowell who is brilliant as the English wizard - my favourite character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Kids Film But Great For Adults Too, 6 May 2003
By A Customer
One of the most enjoyable childrens films I have seen. In fact the kids spent more time laughing at me and the wife cracking up at the film than they did at the film itself!

A simple storyline but a good one, Reno's expressions are superb, lots of zany action.

Thoroughly recommended.
