5.0 out of 5 stars A BOLD ADVENTURE, 7 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Mark Eitzel has been very open minded and visited a new territory far removed from his customary spaces. This collaboration with Greek musicians interpreting his past & present music with a dose of Mediterranean melancholia is a very brave musical exploration. But this album amazingly works and even the most hardnosed Eitzel fanatic will - eventually - admit that this album has some outstanding moments. I just wish more artists just did this! And the success of this album, for me, is that after a few listens this work does not sound like a opportunist " exotica " or world music extravaganza, but an honest, different and interesting interpretation of a musicians work. The Mediterranean melancholy of the Greek instruments suits Eitzel's compositions, and his voice is the warmest to come out of my speakers since his American Music Club days. Only time will tell if the fans will embrace this album, but in my books I applaud Eitzel for his risk taking. Maybe the debate will start with people urging him to re-approach music & touring with a full blown band. The highlights of this album are " Anything ", " What Good Is Love " & " Western Sky ". Sublime. Sublime! I just hope the few cynics who cannot understand the purpose of this album realise their limitations. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars New light on old favourites, 11 Feb 2003
By Paul Mitchell - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the strangest but most beautiful albums you'll hear this year. Ex-American Music Club singer and songwriter re-visits some of the best songs from a 20 year career in the company of a cast of Greek classical musicians. It sounds a crazy idea, but the execution is exquisite. The backings, with acoustic bass and guitar augmented with Greek instruments, are subtle and beautiful. For those who know the songs there is a delight in the new perspectives revealed. For everyone there is Eitzel's amazing voice, some wonderful songs and the joy of a record that sounds like nothing else you've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A strange, beautiful twist on some old gems, 22 Feb 2003
The Ugly American is an excellent return to form for Eitzel, after 2002's disappointing 'Music For Courage and Confidence'. Tear inducing songs such as 'Western Sky', 'Anything' & 'Will You Find Me' now sound upbeat and jaunty... 'Jenny', on the other hand, is still devastating as ever.

The fact that The Ugly American works so well is a testament to Eitzel's epic skills as a musician. First class.
