Black Dice have clearly moved on considerably from their first mini-album, 'Cold Hands', filling out their sound with shimmering electronic textures, and developing ideas, building them up from a simple starting point to dynamic conclusions. It's still pretty free-form stuff (and all the better for it), and the development of their sound definitely makes this a more satisfying album than their last, without seeming too much like they are caving in to traditional musical structure considerations. To me, the reference point for this album would be the more abstract moments of Can's 'Tago Mago' (Augmn and Peking O) but spiced up with moments of almost metallic intensity.

I'd read good things about Black Dice, how they were the new gods of the Art-noise scene. Sadly, this doesn't cut it for me. Sure, it's plenty noisy in places, and pretty experiemental throughout, but there's something missing. It sounds very similar to the Acid Mothers Temple, with that psychedelic influence over it, and I didn't like them either. Oh well!
