Amazon.co.uk Review

Top Gun was a very popular movie of its day for many reasons (male camaraderie and Tom Cruise's looks being two), but Top Gun the game features straight up aerial dog-fighting and ground targeting, with little sense of character, and none of the film's music or one-liners--nothing really but the logo. Still, it looks good and plays well, which is all that matters for most gamers.

The game takes place over four real-world locations: Southeast Asia, the Russian Arctic, the Persian Gulf (no country specified), and the United States itself. The missions--30 in total--don't add up to anything story-wise, and mainly focus on targeting, weapon management, and lots and lots of jet-to-jet fighting. There's also multiplayer and an Instant Action mode, where you can play for score.

Weapon management is paramount, as you only have a small load-out of missiles. You have unlimited ammo in your cannon, but it's difficult to destroy most targets with that. There are a wide range of flyable aircraft, beginning with the F-14 Tomcat and moving on to better made, more complicated, and more mission-specific craft like the Osprey, Harrier, and F-4 Phantom. All aircraft but the Tomcat are locked at the start of the game, which forces you to conquer the single-player missions to get the rest--pretty annoying given that the campaign isn't much more interesting than the Instant Action missions.

But it all looks really good. The different environments--a sea of snow in the Arctic, the brown dune-seas of the Gulf, majestic purple mountains, and even realistic looking cities--all look far less bland than they sound; atmospheric effects like clouds and sunsets are breathtaking, and everything explodes very nicely.

As a console system flight sim Top Gun is decent, as an action game it's above average, but it's certainly not the homage to the film that buyers might expect. If jets are your thing, though, you can't go wrong. --Bob Andrews

Product Description

Top Gun: Combat Zones has 36 different missions--including an academy tutorial--set over three distinct periods of time, and lets you experience every situation jet-fighter pilots can put themselves through, including high-altitude dogfights, low-flying blitz attacks and civil rescues. You will have to fight against dozens of different airborne and ground-based enemy vehicles to prove yourself worthy of your pilot rank. You will master the Navy's top five planes and try to unlock the three bonus planes. Locations include Southeast Asia, Gulf States, the Arctic Circle and Miramar Base, each with numerous landscapes, cities, sea, oil rigs and arctic and desert zones. There are very detailed graphics, especially in low-level flying combat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome, 5 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This game is superb, I took a test drive whilst in Japan at Sony Centre, and I can not wait for it to be released here. The graphics, attention to detail, flight dynamics are all so right. If you have been looking for a good flight/combat sim, then here it is - enjoy - I know I will be soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arcade Game Fans only, 26 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I traded in Thunderhawk for this one, not really hoping for much after the PC version a few years ago, and I was quite pleasantly surprised. The graphics were top notch, and were much better than any other flight type games on the PS2 so far. The missions are also quite varied, ranging from simple shoot down the instructors to complex destroy almost everything in the city. It is important to remember that this is very much an arcade game though, dont expect any realism in the flight model what so ever, which is a shame as this takes away slightly from the gameplay. overall I would recommend this to anyone, however it is worth remembering that it is very much an arcade game dont expect a flight sim. Well done Titus.

I bought this game on Saturday, and it's fantastic ! Doesn't follow the movie at all, but the low-level flying is excellent. Gotta *love* the Baghdad level, flying right through the palace gates ! More please !
