3.0 out of 5 stars 6 outtakes from the "A New Morning" sessions...shame!, 19 Aug 2003
This CD is a Japanese release, compiling all 6 'Obsessions' b-sides (that have all been released in the Uk, over three formats). Naturally b-sides are reffered to as "new tracks" by marketing people, when in fact they are "outtakes"- in other words, tracks which are considered "not good enough" for the resluting album released at the end of a recording spree.... Suede have always delivered in this area though; rather than conning fans with crappy live tracks and demos, they really do deliver.

"Instant Sunshine" shows some aadventure into acoustic-ippy-dippy Beach Boys' vocals, and has a wonderful eclectic appeal, with some very intersting little details. It's a mystery why this track didn't make it onto "A New Morning". "Cool Thing" is a simple, groovy pop song- mixing the clash with Prince. "UFO" reminds one of Supergrass- again a silly, fun uptempo number, which sticks in ones' head fromt he first listen. "Rainy Day Girl" is a suede ballad, and (arguably) is what they do best. It's got a lovely arrangement of tinkling piano and lilting guitars, and a beautifully melancholic melody. "Hard Candy" (produced by Beck collaborator Tony Hoffer) is suitably tonge in cheek fun. A metalic gobby rocker you might say, witha rather brilliant mid section that recalls (strangely enough) The Rocky Horror Picture Show. "ABC song" dissapoints lyrically; about "the future" and "tommorrow", but if you get over the lyrics and listen to the fantastic arrangement, you shall be rewarded.

A nice little extra bonus is the fact that this CD is a Japanese import, so you get a nice lyric booklet in both languages. A brilliant CD to have in your Suede collection; "instant Sunshine" and "Rainy Day Girl" are hidden gems.
