Doleful Lions is effectively a vehicle for the songs and expansive arranging skills of Jonathan Scott, a young American with his feet firmly in the tradition of The Beatles, Brian Wilson......and all those other greats beginning with B who always get trotted out when reviewers hit the automatic pilot button. More relevant to characterising the charm of "Out Like A Lamb" is to note how the strumming simplicity of Scott's songs,which are mostly sung in his high, slightly quavery voice, are lifted skywards by his use of cheap but lushly deployed keyboards, unsourced noise and layered harmony and contrapuntal vocals. Broken Horse, a new label based in Manchester, is to be congratulated on bringing this fine album to the attention of British music fans.
