A fine debut, 17 May 2003
By A Customer
I asked for this album as a birthday present a couple of months ago on the strength of Frequency and having heard the promo Late At Night - and having heard it many times since, I can confidently say I'd have happily spent money on it. The opening track, Statikman drops into a pulsating beat (after a slightly dodgy intro) letting you know whats in store for the rest of the album. It merges into Another Hit, a cheeky feast of breaks. Late At Night then drops in, with its distinctive vocal hook. The pace then slows a bit, with Kato's Revenge using wobbly electronic sounds, before dropping you at the beautifully chilled single, On My Mind (with Ben Onono on vocals). Sparc gets things back on track with a driving beat undercutting a simple melody, before the album's two weak tracks, Satellite with its dodgy vocals and Fifty One, which is a beatless miss-mash of guitars and vocal samples. The preachy Pride's Paranoia and building beats of Wide Open get things back in the right track, before the superb grimy, urban sounding Birdcage, with MG's infectious MC-in over the top. And then to round things off, there's bass-laden club favourite Frequency. These two blokes from Birmingham are from the same stable as The Chemical Brothers & Underworld - Junior Records - and are tipped to be the label's next big act, if you believe the hype. I wouldn't go that far, but the album's well worth the money.

the best new album of the year?, 18 May 2003
Possibly. It took a couple of plays to get into, but now I think that this is one of the strongest albums that I've heard in a very long time. There are no filler tracks here, with the album being full of tracks that I want to skip to. Has a slight early techno feel to it, but with top-notch synth & sample quality. If I must single out some tracks to recommend, then I'd say "Another Hit","Late At Night","On My Mind","Birdcage" & "Frequency" which, I'd guess, hasn't really singled any out. All in, a brilliant album that works. Buy it, or failing that, listen to it, then buy it.
