5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting phonetics recordings plus some tricky games, 12 Jan 2004
By VENTURINI VIVIANA (NAVE, BRESCIA Italy) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This item offers a basic bilingual dictionary, a very useful AudioPad and some tricky games as well.
By using the dictionary, the first thing that catches your attention is the grey background on which bright words in yellow, blue, green, violet and red lie to be read. All entries have IPA transcriptions in bright green, and a yellow loudspeaker offers their pronunciations. Useful information follow in dark blue.
If you right-click on the loudspeaker, the AudioPad opens. You can listen to the native speaker pronunciation and see the graphics, then you record your voice trying to imitate the given model and see your resulting graphics - and absolutely INTERESTING - you can listen to both the recordings in synchronization and watch the two graphics mixed together for a better view of your speech and rhythm.
If you think to be extremely good at a foreign language, just try the crosswords, but mind you, if you are unable to finish them and you click on the white flag, a voice will tell you how bad you are! So, I'll advise you to start with the "learning mode" where a list of terms appears for you to study - and you not only get their translations, but also their meanings and pronunciations. Once you have studied the list of terms, you are ready to try the crosswords as well as the "shooting gallery," a game where you have to type quite fast the translations of the words shown in green on a blackboard. The software continues to repeat the game till you have memorized all the words. If you do it well, you'll get some applause.
The software recognizes different users, and you can sign in your name to have your efforts memorized and displayed in colourful graphs!
I'll advise all foreign languages students to try it. It's a way to improve their knowledge by means of interesting and quite difficult games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must for language learners, 28 Feb 2009
By Mr. M. Bluthner Speight (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I already owned the French and Spanish versions of this product, and the Italian one is just as good.

The dictionary is comprehensive (it contains obscure and even "rude" words you often don't find in other dictionaries). It also has native speaker audio pronunciations of every word. However, the best feature for me is the shooting gallery game.

You can choose your knowledge level, from beginner (which gives you a 500 word vocabulary list) to advanced (3,000 words) or even the entire dictionary. It then comes up as a shooting gallery and you have until the target moves across the screen to type in the translation of the word that pops up (the exercise is usually 15 words at a time). If you don't get a word, it pops up again and you have to get it right 3 times in a row before it stops coming up. It's a fun version of flashcards and it has really helped increase my vocabulary. It's much more fun than reading boring vocab lists and covering up the translations. I play it on my laptop whilst watching TV or on the train.

It also has a crossword generator as another learning exercise which is also very good. For both exercises you can switch between Italian to English, or vice versa.
