Amazon.co.uk Review

The second series of Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcom Family Guy continues with its own brand of acerbic pop-culture satire mixed with gleefully tasteless comedy. Even though the chaotic Griffin household bears more than a passing resemblance to The Simpsons, and their neighbours are uncannily like those from King of the Hill, the show's combination of extended flashbacks, surreal fantasy sequences and delightful non sequiturs ("Math, my dear boy, is nothing more than the lesbian sister of biology") refreshes the familiar formula. And any show that features Adam "Batman" West guest starring as the demented Mayor of Quahog must score points for bizarre originality.

Highlights of the 15 episodes here include Peter discovering his feminine side ("I Am Peter, Here Me Roar"), Stewie and Brian on an eventful road trip ("Road to Rhode Island"), Peter annexing his neighbour's pool and inviting the world's dictators round for a barbeque ("E Peterbus Unum") and, as a bonus episode, the irreverent "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", which was deemed "too offensive for TV". It may be lowbrow scatological farce, but unlike its big-screen live-action cousins (think Farrelly Brothers), Family Guy is always warm-hearted and never vicious.

On the DVD: Family Guy, Series 2 is spread across two discs that boast Dolby 5.1 sound but standard 4:3 picture. There's no "Play All" facility (something else this release has in common with The Simpsons on DVD) and there are no extras other than the "bonus" episode. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars and then some, 23 May 2008
By Andrew Kerr (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I seriously doubt that I have to take the time to explain what Family Guy is, as the chances are that you - like so many others are a fan, or at the very least have seen some episodes.

In my opinion this second season of Family Guy considerably improves on the first, which is not something that's easy to do as season one was nothing less than fantastic. But Family Guy season two is packed to bursting point with hilarious and sometimes outrageous jokes. Seth MacFarlane never fails to deliver pure comical entertainment. It's good to be given a daring show that not afraid of offending people (on that note if your easily offended then you probably should avoid Family Guy.) I would have to say the best episode in the season is "Let's go to the hop." I mean teenagers licking toads to make themselves high - bloody brilliant. But I doubt any episode will disappoint anyone as they are all gems. All of the characters from Peter to the mayor are unique with their own depths, personalities and values but Stewie remains my favorite character. It's a bit of a shame that we're not given any special features as it is most likely something that most would enjoy. Some never before seen deleted scenes would be have been good. But still that doesn't detract from an otherwise perfect show.

Family Guy can really be enjoyed and appreciated - not something I would often say for an animated television show. But seriously Family Guy is unequalled and in a league of its own. It has got to be one of the greatest comedies of all time, and owing to the fact that the show can be watched again and again, makes this a very good purchase. Also remember to consider all other seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Witty & Politically Incorrect., 20 Dec 2002
By J. P. Ellison "jpellison" (UK) - See all my reviews

Family Guy is one of the most unrecognised cartoons in the UK. Half the people I know have never heard of it, but sit them down to watch it and they just can't help laughing at the sheer shock value, and the brilliant jokes, the absurd stupidity of some of; well; one of the family members, the innuendos, the slurs, and the references to american pop culture (That often go over my head, because I'm not American).

If you've seen the TV series, and you weren't exactly shocked, then that's because half of it is cut. The best parts, most offensive, and most brilliant parts are all here in glorious DVD quality. What's more, the Americans can't even buy Season 1 on DVD yet!

In Conlusion, buy this DVD. You won't regret it. It's definetely for the adult minded though, and is more intelligent than 'The Simpsons' - but not for Grandma. Nothing is sacred anymore - You'll be quoting this show to your friends and family in no time. Don't forget to get season 1 too!

5.0 out of 5 stars An animated comedy with jokes faster than a Lewis Hamilton qualifying lap, 7 Aug 2007
By Lando Malak "Dok" (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Before I comment any further on Family Guy, I will just get the extremely boring and repetitive comparisons with THE SIMPSONS out ot the way. It is an animated comedy about a family and so is THE SIMPSONS. In this, the Griffin family have an obsession with the TV and so do THE SIMPSONS and that is roughly where the similarities end. Seriously though, do I give a flying circus if there are a few similarities?, DO I BLEEP. Is STAR WARS the same as STAR TREK?, NO. Are RICE CRISPIES the same as CORN FLAKES?, NO. Are DOGS the same as CATS?, NO. Can I like THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY?, YES.

The jokes in Family Guy are faster than a Lewis Hamilton qualifying lap but even if they are too fast for some people, it can still be entertaining and funny in other ways. It takes more than fast jokes to make an animated comedy something special, it needs characters that are unique and are so different from each other to standout, sadly this is where Family Guy fails miserably, NOT.

It would take me far too long to mention all the characters and so I will just mention my personal favourites, the first is the cutest and most adorable baby ever to appear on TV, NOT. The second is the most stupidest and aggressive non stop barking dog ever to appear on TV, NOT. STEWIE THE BABY and BRIAN THE DOG are the two most reasons why I absolutely love Family Guy. Even just the thought of a baby that makes Hitler look like a good man but can get away with it because he is a baby and a talking dog that is the most witty and intelligent member of the family almost makes me laught to the point of crying. One last special mention must go to the Griffins love of TV because it takes it to a whole new emotional and nostalgic level. There are plenty of classic TV moments, THE FLINTSTONES, DALLAS, THE X FILES, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE TWILIGHT ZONE are just a few memorable moments of nostalgic bliss.

If you still have never seen Family Guy and are easily offended, then avoid it like your worst TV programme ever. If however you are not easlily offended, then give Family Guy a chance because it gets a five star recommendation from Scarterhill. HOLY CRAP, IS THAT THE TIME.
