5.0 out of 5 stars Perstel MP10 Chic 128mb Silver MP3 Player, 26 Dec 2002
By Andrew Hodgson "hojkoff" (Edinburgh Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This incredibly small contraption is only just bigger that the AA battery that is contains and at the same time it lacks to substitute size for quality. The quality of the sound overall is quite good but when it comes to heavy bass the headphones fail to deliver the sounds, it is hard to tell whether this is the supplied headphones or the Mp3 player. With 128 megabits of memory inside it you're never short of space for your files. However the files are not stored onto a memory stick but the player it self, thus you cant actually extend the memory or buy extra memory for it. The drivers that it comes with work on all Windows operating systems. It's so easy to operate, upload onto your computer and download the music files onto the player that even a very young child would have no problem with making sense of it. It weighs only a minute 32 grams, without a battery, thus it doesn't even feel like it is in your pocket. As small as it is it has no problem with high volumes. It comes complete with many extra functions such as hold, shuffle, and sound equalisers. The 18 hour battery life is enough for you to listen for a long time but in terms of batter life 18 hours is pretty poor, however it does have the advantage of not using a slim line battery as you can buy as many battery as you wish and use them one of the other instead of having to wait 10 - 12 hours for a rechargeable battery to restore its life. Economically perhaps the slim line is better but in terms of convenience the AA battery has the advantage or they are almost always available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!!!, 29 May 2003
I ordered both the Perstel and the Kiiro 128MB MP3 players and settled on the former because of its better battery life. It's a lot bigger than the Kiiro (because it uses an AA instead of AAA battery) but more robust.
I bought it because I go to the gym a lot and can't stand the mind-numbing music they play. Hence the MP3 player fits into my workout pants pocket and delivers superb quality sound. (I shrink my audio files to 13% MP3). I can get at least two albums at this quality, which is enough for a damn good workout!
I scoff at the morons who use giant CD players hooked on to their belt. Get real!
I've jogged and rowed with this device and it hasn't skipped yet. I ditched the headphones supplied and used my faithful Sony Sports foldables which deliver my heavy metal right where I need it... between the ears. The various music settings enhance the listening experience and starts where you stopped it last. The screen is illuminated and the software is simple and easy to use.

Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for kids, good for parents, 24 May 2003
By Cazbro (Surrey) - See all my reviews
With trepidation we (my 11 year old son and I) launched into the perilous business of purchasing an MP3 player. You would have thought that endless experiences of buying computer games and electrical gadgetry that don't work/require a degree in electronics/hours on extortionate technical helpline/numerous patches, new drivers etc etc to get them going would have put us off. Especially as mum is from an era when a Dansette record player was the height of technology and music consisted of 45s, EPs and LPs. However, fashion being fashion, the primary school kids are now following hot foot in the wake of their older bros and sisters and MP3 players are what they have to have. Several hours on the internet later, my son concluded 'I want that one' - not any other one - that one. These words are normally enough to strike dread in the heart of any hapless parent. However, the purchase was easy enough and with pounding heart (would we have to placate a disappointed and frustrated child and slide away defeated by the pace of technology?) we attempted to load the software and get the thing to work. Minor hitch with USB connectors (you don't want to know, it was never like this with 45s - or maybe it was, the needles always needed changing)), some helpful support from Perstel, and then miracle of miracles it worked! Parental credibility restored - heroine in son's eyes. MP 10 is a neat, gorgeous looking contraption, produces music good enough to listen to, and is so painless and simple even mum is thinking of getting to grips with downloads. It has lots of features (backlighter, file display etc) my techy 11 year old mastered in a trice and he is now happy bunny, staying up til midnight amassing his file collection. Never mind that in a couple of months he might find the lack of expandable memory a hassle or the headphones a mite fiddly, he is now the grooviest kid in the playground, for the next few days, til his mates get something groovier. And happy child, happy parent. Phew.
