5.0 out of 5 stars The long wait has paid off !!, 13 Feb 2003
By A Customer
Jay could have rushed out a sub-standard album after her split with Bucks Fizz. But we just knew from the quality of her performances in those days that she was worth much more than that. This album has been a long time coming, but, WOW, it has been well worth the wait. Working alongside her husband David Colquhoun (who also is credited with writing for Ian Brown,) Jay has put together an album of top quality tracks. This album is so refreshing as it sounds like nothing else around at the moment. Every track a different sound. I had no idea what this album would sound like when I brought it, and still can't put it in any one category. All I can say is that it is a million miles from anything we've heard from Jay before. This album 'ROCKS,' go and get it now. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ex Eurovision Babe comes of age !, 14 May 2003
I have to confess my speculative purchase of this album was fuelled mostly by memories of leather gymslips and video performances from the later "raunchy" Bucks Fizz era. The reality however is this is a really good album far from the lightweight pop you might expect.

I've played this to several people and asked them to say who they thought it was, most volunteered the likes of Aimee Mann or Julianne Regan / All About Eve, which says much for the quality of the material present. The songs are varied ranging from hard edged rock to melodic harmony with good guitar work and tasteful / innovative use of sampling. The overall sound is refreshing and Jay's vocals have a throaty rawness in places which compliments the obscurity of some of the lyrics.

I expect hubby Dave has provided a lot of the input to the material and recording but the vocals do it all justice and the result is a fine and varied album. I personally rate "Pigs on the Cake", "Jack and Jill" and "Wednesday's Child" as the strongest tracks, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Compare this to what her ex-colleagues have acchieved !. It's a pity Angel Air records can't give this more publicity. I think Jay Aston could have a serious comeback if she wants one.

Buy this album, you wont be dissapointed !.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jay fights back!, 1 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Since Jay was my favorite member of Bucks Fizz, I had to buy this CD - and what a big surprise! "Alive and well" is the best CD released (in my humble opinion, of course) in the last few years. This CD has it all: hard rock, pop, reggae, ballads and dance - and Jay sings as lovely as ever. "Everlasting love" and "Jack'n Jill" should be huge hits, well all of the songs on this album could be released as singles. Buy this!! And fall in love!
