5.0 out of 5 stars A Romeo to die for, 27 Jun 2007
By JayJayDee (Allovertheworld) - See all my reviews
There is only one third of the ballet available on this disc. And the recording is nearly fifty years old. Some collectors may have bought these ballet highlights on a mid-sixties Music for Pleasure 12 inch vinyl disc. But is it just nostalgia that makes this the most poetic and powerful Romeo and Juliet ever?

Not for me to say. I am biased. Previn, Maazel, Zhuraitis, Rozhdestvensky and others have given us marvellous performances of this music, in part and in full. They are all inspirational. This is wonderful music by any standards. I have never heard a bad performance.

But if you want to know why these lovers wanted to die for each other then you have to hear the last two tracks of Karel Ancerl's selection: "Romeo and Juliet Before Parting" and "Romeo at Juliet's Tomb".

These Supraphon recordings of the 1960 Prague acoustics are as good as anything committed to disc in the twentieth century, and you simply will not hear music-making like this ever again. The woodwind are rustic and poetic, the strings soar and the brass cut into your soul in a way that will have you reaching for the leotards to try and reach this pinnacle of art for yourself.

Rather like Eugene Ormandy, Karel Ancerl hardly put a foot wrong in a lifetime of music making and you will perhaps not be surprised to discover how good is the accompanying performance of Peter and the Wolf. But if you put an hour's effort into this disc I guarantee you will then go looking for Ancerl's Shostakovich, Dvorak, Stravinsky and his Janacek.

Ancerl and the 1960s Czech Philharmonic - a lost generation of musicians captured only in monochrome photography, but with glowing sound and an integrity that searched for beauty as well as accuracy.
