The Smart Book from VTech is a touch-sensitive, interactive book designed to encourage reading among 4 to 7 year olds. The unit itself is stylish and portable and is powered by 4x AA batteries (not supplied) and includes a special Vtouch stylus pen. After several minutes of idle time the unit will close down to preserve power. Usefully for parents there is also a volume dial. The Smart Book base unit also includes a demo button for added guidance.

The unit arrives with a 34-page activity book, which then interacts with the stylus pen. By touching various parts of the book your child can enjoy the full range of activities on offer. The first half of the book is devoted to a fun little story about bookworm--at the simplest level the Smart Book will read the story to your child in a proper and clear English accent. For greater interactivity, your little learner can control the pace and choose from a number of fun activities designed to encourage language development and phonic awareness all relating to the story. Once through with the story, the child can progress to a number of pages and fun activities centred around the development of core numeric skills (number recognition, addition/subtraction, number patterns etc). Other pages and activities are devoted to the developed of more creative, imaginative play such as music recognition and composition and scavenger hunts.
