Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Cranium is an excellent game that embodies all the best aspects of board games--it doesn't last too long (about an hour for a game), it's exciting and funny and it also relies on the chance element as well as skill. The game is played by two or more teams of one or more players and the object is to get round the board into the Cranium Central area and be the first team to complete the activities there. Easy, isn't it? To do this, each team has to complete an activity, the selection of which depends on the square they last landed on--but it has to be completed before the egg timer runs out. There are also two routes to follow--the fast route (only available if you complete your first activity within the time) and the scenic route for those who don't. The activities are split into four groups: "Creative Cat", which asks, amongst other things, that you sculpt a miniature tea set out of clay--or draw a picture of baked beans on toast (with your eyes closed, of course). Then there is "Data Head"--do you know where the saying "back to square one" originates? Did Thomas Crapper really invent the flushing toilet? Another activity is the "Word Worm"--can you spell words backwards or solve puzzles with a cryptic clue such as "nervous neckwear"? Finally, there is the "Star Performer" activity (all families have one or two in this category.) Get them to emulate a John Cleese sketch or act "a back seat driver". When a team reaches Cranium Central, they have to complete one activity from each activity category to win. --Ben King

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every family!, 7 Oct 2003
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
What a wonderful, novel, fun game Cranium is!

I went away on the annual family holiday armed with this board game and I can honestly say it's the most family fun we've had in a long time. The best thing about it is the diversity of the challenges - clay modelling, drawing, charades, spelling, humming, puzzles, general knowledge to name but a few, it's certainly not easy to get bored with it. I expected we would have a game one evening but we ended up giving up the nightly trip to the pub/club to stay in, get the drinks in and get this game out, it was hilarious fun. Age is no obstacle either, my two nieces of 8 and 10 played, along with myself (24), my partner (30), my parents (57 & 60) and even my Grandad of 85 had a go.

One of my nieces has now asked for the game for Christmas and I know it'll be a good buy as it's a game that will come out of the cupboard time and time again... well worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Board Game Ever!, 6 Mar 2003
By Matt (England) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
I first saw this game on Boxing Day 2002 when I played it at a friend's house. It sounded a little complicated at first but five minutes in and I was hooked. I decided to go out and buy it but couldn't because absolutely everywhere was sold out. This game is addictive and incredible fun to play (especially if combined with alcohol - give it a try and see what your friends will do).

The aim of the game is to get round the board (no change there) but the way you do it is where the fun starts. There are four colours you can land on. Red (questions, multiple choice etc.), Yellow (anagrams, spelling forwards and backwards, fill in the blanks etc.), Blue (drawing, sculpting etc.) and Green (acting, singing etc.).

Each team takes turns to move round the board and they have to take a card and perform the action from the tile they land on. If they win the challenge (one or more people guesses what the other is doing/drawing/singing etc.) and if they get it right they move on. You can also get Club Cranium cards which means every team performs the same card and the first team to guess it move on.

I can see this easily going down as one of the classic board games of all time along side Monopoly and Scrabble. There are already two booster packs for the game, the second of which contains four tubs of cranium clay so there is now the option for Club Cranium Sculptorades). The only problem with this game is that you need at least four people to play it, it is definitely a "more the merrier" style game with no limit to the number of players you can have (a maximum of four teams but no limit to the number of team members).

In conclusion, you can't go wrong. As long as you're over the age of eight (some of the challenges would be too difficult to younger children e.g. impersonate Margaret Thatcher, hum House Of The Rising Sun or spell "photosynthesis" backwards) then you'll have no end of fun playing this game. A must for any family gathering or drunken student party!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cranium; a great family game!, 24 Nov 2002
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Cranium combines creativity, logic, trivia, word play and just plain goofiness in an interactive board game that is a lot of fun! It's taken the best ideas of Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, creative dramatics, and word puzzles from a sunday newspaper. In a single game players may have to hum a Beatles tune, mold clay into a frying pan, unscramble a phrase, and answer a historical question. Though it is greared towards adults and families with older children (ages 10 and up)it is perfectly "safe" from a parental point of view. Our kids had a blast playing it with us,their Aunt, Uncle and Grandmother. We never laughed so much!
