Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

With no moving parts, the iPod’s new touch-sensitive scroll wheel is less vulnerable to dust, dirt or sand and more durable. The touch-sensitive scroll wheel is designed to retains its crisp feel throughout the lifespan of your iPod. There’s even a clicker that makes a tiny clicking sound when the scroll wheel is moving.

Small though it is, the iPod packs a lot of storage. The number of songs it holds depends on the compression rate you choose. At a 160Kbps compression rate (the default setting for encoding MP3s in iTunes), 20GB equals approximately 4,000 songs, or about 400 CDs. At 128Kbps — the most popular compression rate people use for MP3s — 20GB is equivalent to approximately 5,200 songs, or about 520 CDs. That’s how big it is on the inside. And with that much space, you might also find yourself storing documents, files and applications on your iPod in FireWire disk mode.

iPod’s rechargeable lithium polymer battery gives you 10 hours of continuous playback. In a hurry to get it recharged? Fast-charge the battery to 80% of capacity in an hour, and get it fully recharged in three hours. FireWire charges your iPod battery whenever it’s connected to your Mac. So iPod automatically charges while you’re transferring your music.

With an industry-leading 20 minutes of skip protection, iPod keeps playing without missing a beat. iPod has a 32MB solid-state memory cache, meaning that it has no mechanical or moving parts. Skip protection works by continually preloading up to 20 minutes of music into the cache, so your iPod is not affected by sudden movements.

The 10GB and 20GB iPod models include a clip-on wired remote control that lets you fast-forward or rewind a track, play, pause and adjust volume using just one hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best MP3 player available today, 4 Dec 2002
By David Glover (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought the original 5GB mac iPod when it came out, using it on my PC with the aid of "XPlay", and fell in love with it. I could store a significant proportion of my CD collection, and listen to any track, any time, anywhere. It changed the way I listen to music.

Now that I've bought the 20Gb version, I can store every CD I own, and I no longer need XPlay. It works with your PC natively, as long as you have a Firewire (i.Link, or IEEE 1394) port.

Why is this better than any other MP3 player?
    1. It uses Firewire, not USB, so copying your music takes seconds, not minutes.
    2. It's really small, and good looking. Fits into a pocket nicely.
    3. The 20GB hard disk will probably store your entire CD collection, should you want it to.

The new models also come with a carrying bag, a belt clip, and a remote control.

Although this is probably also the most expensive MP3 player around, I personally think it's worth every penny, and would hate to part with mine.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I love, I need, ipod, 20 Dec 2002
Since discovering MP3 player about 3 years ago, i've never used anything else to listen to my favourite music. I've used MD players to make hard coppies but it doesn't come close to the top of the cool rating as an MP3 player. The ipod is needless to say, the mother of all MP3s. with a whopping 20gb storage capacity i'm able to listen to every cd in my collection without the hassle changing discs and skipping tracks.

I'm also using it as my home jukebox with just a couple of nifty wires, you can have it playing all evening. i've also been making use of the address book which saves me from having to whip out my palm pilot everytime i need to look up someone.

Apple have certainly outdone themselves with this little box of tricks and it has to be the sexiest looking machine to be seen with. Well done, boys!

5.0 out of 5 stars just the best, forget the rest, 25 Jan 2003

Having bought a Creative Jukebox a year or so ago, I wasn't convinced by MP3 players. It took ages to start up, skipping between tracks was a pain and the advertised battery life of four hours was never achieved by mine, and it weighed a ton. However, I kept reading good reviews of the iPod and when they produced a PC version, I thought I'd give it a go. It is amazing. Looks to die for, intuitive controls, fast downloading and impressive (and as advertised) battery life. Have all your music everywhere you go all the time!
