Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Shining series has long been popular amongst fans of the RPG genre, having appeared on the Mega Drive, Game Gear and Sega Saturn. Shining Soul, the latest instalment of the series, comes in the form of an exciting action RPG, which takes place a thousand years before the Mega Drive game Shining Force. At the heart of our tale there once existed a civilisation that was destroyed by the Dark Dragon, the embodiment of destruction. The Dark Dragon has been sealed for hundreds of years with the populace living peacefully, until the fateful day it again emerges and renews its reign of terror. A mysterious group called the "Crew of Light" appear, vowing to defeat the Dark Dragon.

Players have a choice of four character classes--Warriors, Archers, Dragonutes and Wizards--which they can select from depending on their playing style. Players can also customise the names for their characters as well as their appearance. With a 4-player multi-player link, this will unite all fans of the series for an all-out gaming experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shining Strong, 29 April 2003
By A Customer
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up- in honesty I'd never heard of the megadrive games let alone played them, but I am a big fan of RPG's.
This in reality is more action orientated than your standard rpg and is VERY linear, yet stil fun.

What I will say is that the graphics are brilliant and you really get attatched to your little character. There are four character classes to choose from- Swordsman Archer Sorceress and Dragonute. If it so takes you, you can choose one of four colourschemes for your character when you name them.

Also, choosing a character is somewhat like choosing a difficulty level.
Pick a swordsman or dragonute and youre a close range fighter but youre a lot stronger with your physical attacks. They're both fairly average at working they're way through the game.
If you pick an archer or sorceress you get to place a larger distance between you and the enemies, but the two are very different.
Pick an archer and you'll find it quite easy to get into the game, wheras pick a sorceress and you're almost guaranteed to die a few times before you get the hang of the 'attack and run away' strategy- the only way to level up with the sorceress initially. The other trickly part to the sorceress is that in higher levels her magic points can drop right down very uickly when facing enemies. I personally find it a lot trickier to beat bosses using a sorceress than using an archer (in my opinion the easiest option) or a swordsman/fighter type.

But hey- its a game, and who doesn't relish a challenge?

Its a linear quest to be sure but its fun. You attack your enemies in real time but although repetitive its highly enjoyable.
To start with you'll find the bosses quite hard, but if you level up you'll find that both the 'patrolling' enemies and the bosses become easier to beat.

This is one of the few games where I find leveling up to be truly enjoyable, and also exploring for the 'hidden areas' that are to be found in some of that later landscapes.

It's not for everyone but to me it was and is a highly enjoyable action rpg. In honesty its somewhat addictive, and yet at the same time perfect if you only have small amounts of time.
What may wear on you initially is that when you save the game 'in the field' you get sent back to town, and this can be especially exasperating once you get to the larger dungeons, but like I said- I found the battles so enjoyable it stopped mattering.

What I found was that I truly wished I could tranfer the weapons I found between my saves. While it is possible to arrange hghly complex item trade pickups with your friends in multiplayer modes but you'll quickly decide you'll have a better time actually playing.

...I strongly suggest that you buy this game as its good on your own, but even more enjyable when you team up with friends (Although it can appear a little crowded then)

Its great fun whether you have lots of time or just a little, whther your on your own of with friends. My recomendation is to buy this game- I found it enjoyable and I hope anyone who reads this and thinks its their sort of thing will try it and enjoy it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but Effective, 19 Sep 2003

It's unfair to compare this game with something like Zelda or Golden Sun, for example, but although the gameplay is quite a simple 'kill and collect' RPG it is pretty addictive once you get into it. The graphics are nice - not outstanding - and the music is fairly good. The game is also quite challenging later on when the 'dungeons' get larger and are more populated with enemies.

You select 1 character type out of 4 for the entire game - I have tried all but like the Archer the best as this character can shoot from a distance and can kill enemies through bars quite easily which keeps your stats up. A good tip is to revisit areas which you've already cleared as this way you pick up more items and gold and up your stats before the next area.

I like this game because I can play it for five or so minutes or a couple of hours at a time. If you like the 'kill and collect' type of RPG then I think you will like this. If you prefer to solve puzzles and wander round huge landscapes then you perhaps would be better off with Zelda or Golden Sun games. I enjoy both and I like this - it is curiously addictive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game, 2 April 2003
By A Customer
this game is great for those who are new to rpgs as well as seasoned veterans. The graphics are excellent, and it's easy to grasp the controls. you have the choice of playing as a warrior, wizard, archer or dragon warrior, each of which has it's own skills and advantages, as well as weaknesses. This is a good game for players of all levels. You are able to save your progress, which is great, and you can bank money and items which means if you die you won't lose them.
