4.0 out of 5 stars Sophie Rocks!, 7 Mar 2003
By Mr. Steven Bootes "sbootes" (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sophie B. Hawkins (it can be safely said) has never received the acclaim she has deserved - or the record sales and chart positions! Tracks like Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover and Right Beside You SHOULD have been world beaters which went to the top of charts all over the world. Instead they were both moderately successsful, and now the only songs of Sophie's that the average Joe on the street knows by her.

So both of those classics have become perennial radio staples, which of course has cheapened them over the years, so they don't sound as fresh and good as they should! A vicious cycle indeed. But that's where the other tracks on this collection come in, with the majority of them being good pop/rock songs that you will play for as long as you own the CD.

The biggest selling points for this album are the two aforementioned tracks, as they are the best ones on here. But the others are good, and even if they weren't you should buy this collection for those two classics alone! And this time the DJ won't talk over the start and finish or play the radio stations 10-year-old scratched vinyl copy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection, 28 April 2008

This is a fine collection for fans of Sophie B Hawkins or indeed someone wishing to becaome familiar with her work. The most well known tracks are the first two "Damn I Wish I was Your Lover" and "Right Beside You" but my personal fabourite is "As I Lay Me Down" which gets better every time I hear it.
This is easy listening filled with great lyrics and engaging melodies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strangely endearing, 10 Feb 2009
By Mr. Thomas Thatcher "Tom Thatcher" (Salisbury, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is something very likeable about Sophie. I remember reading an article in the old Melody Maker wherein for some unknown reason she had removed her clothes. This seemed a million miles from the interview with this articulate, talented and highly-intelligent singer.

I admit that I bought this for "As I lay me down to sleep" which is incredibly beautiful and very unlike the rest of her cannon, especially in the way that Sophie enters the first verse three-quarters of the way through the first organ sequence. But there are lots of other good things on this too. "Damn, I wish I was your lover" was and is a real cracker, and "California Here I come" has great chords and words, plus some excellent swoops and vocal harmonies in the verses. I gather that Sophie is also a gifted musician, and it would be good to know what she plays and when. All through the album her songwriting abilities are beyond question. One real oddity is a very unique version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," with some incredibly skilfull and unusual harmonies, all, I think, by Miss Hawkins herself.

The USA and Canada have a knack of producing talented and original female musicians, from Joni Mitchell to Judy Henske to Paula Cole to Alanis Morissette and to Sophie herself - plus many others. I do not want to listen to this album every day, but just occasionally it is the only one that will do the job on, say, a long drive.

If I have a criticism, it's that the inherent harshness of Sophie's powerful and ranging voice can sometimes be very cutting - but all in all, this came as a very pleasant surprise and I am going to investigate further.
